Abstract: A method includes moving a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) slider relative to a magnetic recording medium. The slider comprises a writer, a writer heater, and a near-field transducer (NFT). For each of a plurality of different head-to media spacings a test tone is written to a track of the medium, the test tone is read and a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of an amplitude of the read test tone is captured. A first DFT curve is generated at a beginning of writing the test tones. A second DFT curve is generated at a saturated state of writing the test tones. An amount of horizontal shift between the first and second DFT curves is computed. The amount of horizontal shift corresponding to writer heater power required to compensate for NFT clearance offset due to laser induced writer protrusion.

Abstract: A data storage system may have a number of data storage devices that each have a non-volatile memory connected to a memory buffer. The memory buffer can consist of a map unit having a predetermined size. In receipt of a data sector into the map unit of the memory buffer, the data sector may be identified as a runt with a runt module connected to the memory buffer and the non-volatile memory. The runt module can generate and subsequently execute a runt handling plan to fill the size of the map unit before storing the filled map unit in the non-volatile memory.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for providing proactive cloud orchestration services for a cloud hardware infrastructure. A health management system may monitor component(s) of the cloud hardware infrastructure. The health management system may determine a failure probability metric for the component(s) based on the monitoring of the component and in consideration of historical information associated with the component, or similar components. The health management system may determine an optimization strategy for the component and, when an optimization decision has been reached, initiate a reconfiguration procedure to implement the optimization strategy. The optimization strategy may provide for mitigating or eliminating the consequences of the component failure associated with data loss, downtime, and the like.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for managing shared resources in a data storage device such as a solid-state drive (SSD). In some embodiments, a non-volatile memory (NVM) has a population of semiconductor memory dies which are divided into die sets for different users. Each die set includes user garbage collection units (GCUs) for storage of user data blocks by the associated user and overprovisioned global GCUs to store user data blocks from the users of the other die sets. When an imbalance condition exists such that the workload traffic level of a first die set exceeds a workload traffic level of a second die set, at least one host I/O command for the first die set is offloaded for servicing using a selected global GCU of the second die set. The offloaded data may be subsequently transferred to the first die set after the imbalance condition is resolved.

Abstract: A method includes performing a cleaning process. The cleaning process includes measuring a thickness value of a contaminant on a slider. It is determined whether the thickness value is greater than a target thickness. If it is determined that the thickness is greater than the target thickness, the slider is cleaned based on the measured thickness value. The cleaning process is iteratively repeated until the thickness value is less than or equal to the target thickness.

Abstract: The disclosed controller includes a DDR architecture that includes a dual-channel interface designed to include DQS IO ports configured to generate a first DQS signal that is a distance of substantially 0.125 times the period of a clock signal (ΔT denoting the 0.125 of the period of the clock signal) ahead of a rising edge of the clock signal and a second DQS signal that is a distance of substantially 0.125 times the period of the clock signal behind the rising edge of a clock signal. If ΔT is more than a tDQSS then ΔT is set to tDQSS, where tDQSS is a maximum allowable time between either DQS signal and the rising edge of the clock signal.

Abstract: Methods, systems and computer-readable storage media for requesting programming of N portions of a plurality of non-volatile memories (NVMs) in accordance with received data. Redundancy information sufficient to recover from failures of M of the N portions for which programming was requested is updated in response to the requesting programming. Upon identifying one to M of the N portions that have failed the programming, re-programming of the one to M of the N portions is requested in accordance with data calculated based at least in part on the redundancy information.
