Abstract:
A device and method are provided combining the thermal and mechanical attributes of two distinct materials: shape memory materials and super-cooled liquids (SCLs). In one example of the invention, the super-cooled liquid is contained within a shape memory polymer (SCL liquid is filled into a shape memory polymer tube), so that the heat released by the SCL when it is mechanically triggered to crystallize itself triggers the shape change of the shape memory polymer. The device is suitable as a reusable warmer, as a dental mold material, in medical applications where reusable heat packs are indicated, particularly for application to difficult contours, and for large deployable structures such as satellite antennae and temporary shelters.

A stranded wire having improved fatigue characteristics and made of a shape memory and/or superelastic material, such as Ni/Ti or alloys thereof. Further, the stranded wire may be coiled along the entire length of the wire or only a portion thereof to form one or more coil springs. The stranded and optionally coiled wire is heat treated to set the wire in the twisted configuration.

A device for attenuating thermal lensing in an optical resonator is disclosed. The device includes a laser rod having an optical axis, a first high-reflectivity element disposed within a path of the optical axis, an outcoupling element disposed within a path of the optical axis, a second high-reflectivity element disposed within a path of the optical axis, and a potential source coupled to the second high-reflectivity element. Application of a first potential from the potential source onto the second high-reflectivity element causes the second high-reflectivity element to be substantially reflective, and application of a second potential from the potential source onto the second high-reflectivity element causes the second high reflectivity element to be substantially transmissive, to preserve a TEM00 beam quality within the optical resonator under varying thermal conditions.

The dental appliance having the necessary stiffness or strength to firmly secure the appliance on the teeth and provide controlled forces required for repositioning the teeth, until such time as removal of the appliance is desired. The appliance may be configured for use with a removal mechanism. The removal mechanism provides for selective release of the appliance from the teeth as the removal mechanism undergoes a state change stimulated by an environmental stimulus or environmental switch.
Abstract:
A fiber tip fluid output device is provided for holding a fiber tip in an electromagnetic energy cutting apparatus and for directing water particles over a radiation delivery end of the fiber tip. The output device includes a generally cylindrical body having an outer surface, a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween. The lumen is sized and shaped to accommodate a fiber tip therethrough so that the fiber tip extends through the lumen. The device further includes a plurality of apertures extending around the generally cylindrical body, with each of the apertures fluidly connecting the outer surface to the lumen. Fluid is mixed around the cylindrical body, before entering the lumen through the apertures for additional mixing. The mixed fluid is then output from the lumen onto the fiber tip, for subsequent interaction with electromagnetic energy in an interaction zone above a target surface.

A fluid conditioning system is adapted to condition the fluid used in medical and dental cutting, irrigating, evacuating, cleaning, and drilling operations. The fluid may be conditioned by adding flavors, antiseptics and/or tooth whitening agents such as peroxide, medications, and pigments. In addition to the direct benefits obtained from introduction of these agents, the laser cutting properties may be varied from the selective introduction of the various agents.
Abstract:
A method of forming a superelastic endodontic file by grinding a superelastic wire to form a file blank, and rotating a first end of the blank while preventing rotation of a second end of the blank is disclosed. The file blank is maintained in the austenite phase until twisted to form a stress induced martensite which is plastically deformed by the twisting. A heat treatment step may be performed prior to twisting, during twisting or after twisting of the preform. The method disclosed allows for increased flexibility in the design of files including the production of a rhomboid superelastic file.

A process for heat treatment of a plastically moldable workpiece, by plastically molding the workpiece at a first temperature to form a shape, mechanically restraining the workpiece by means of form-fitting, bringing the workpiece to a second temperature and subjecting it at least partially to a heat treatment, and removing the workpiece, wherein mechanically restraining the workpiece by means of form-fitting is accomplished by embedding the workpiece in a densely packed pourable embedding material located in a container, wherein the embedding material is stressed. The invention also includes an apparatus for practicing the process.
