Abstract: According to some embodiments, a storage device includes a first actuator and a second actuator rotatable around a common axis. The storage device further includes a first electrical connector configured to communicate electrical signals to and from the first actuator, and a second electrical connector configured to communicate electrical signals to and from the second actuator and to communicate electrical signals to and from the first electrical connector. The storage device includes a hermetically-sealed body, the hermetically-sealed body including a base deck and a top cover, wherein the second electrical connector is configured to send and receive electrical signals to and from the first actuator and the second actuator through a single aperture in the hermetically-sealed body.

The module further includes a first permeable member covering the opening in the bottom surface, a desiccant positioned within the second section of the inner body member area, and a non-permeable member covering the second section of the inner body member.

Abstract: A hybrid storage device includes a first storage medium configured to store data at a first speed and a second storage medium configured to store data at a second speed. The first storage medium may be a NAND flash storage medium, and the second storage medium may be disc storage medium. Partitions of the first storage medium are associated with partitions of the second storage medium to form at least two storage tiers. Each of the storage tiers may include different NAND partition capacities. The storage device further includes a peer to peer communication channel between the first storage medium and the second storage medium for moving data between a NAND partition and HDD partition. The storage device is accessible via a dual port SAS or PCIe interface.

Abstract: Implementations disclosed herein include a method to synthesize the controller of a multi-stage servo control system with multiple actuators in a hard disk drive by dividing controller synthesis into multiple dual-stage steps. The method includes measuring a first output of a first plant corresponding to a first actuator, measuring a second output of a second plant corresponding to a second actuator, designing a first controller responsive to the first output, designing a second controller responsive to the second output, and combining the first output and the second output to obtain a first combined output in a first dual-stage. The method also includes designing a third controller responsive to the first combined output, measuring a third output from a third plant corresponding to a third actuator, designing a fourth controller responsive to the third output, and combining the first combined output and the third output to obtain a second combined output.

A preamplifier is coupled to the power supply. The preamplifier is configured to monitor a forward voltage across the laser diode while operating the laser diode at a constant current during a write operation, detect a change in the forward voltage indicative of laser power instability, and generate a signal in response to detecting the forward voltage change.

Abstract: A near-field transducer has an enlarged portion with a layer of soft plasmonic material. A peg is embedded in a lower part of the enlarged portion that faces a media-facing surface. The peg has an elongated outer part that extends from a lower edge of the enlarged portion towards the media-facing surface and an embedded part that is embedded within the enlarged portion. The embedded part could be any shape. The peg is formed of a thermally robust plasmonic material.

Abstract: The technology disclosed herein includes a method for dividing a body of user data into a plurality of data blocks, and writing the plurality of data blocks into chunk zones in parallel streams, the chunk zones located in a first ordered pool of storage devices. In some implementations, the method includes adding additional storage devices to the first ordered pool making a second ordered pool, including the first ordered pool, and writing the plurality of data blocks across the second ordered pool of storage devices, such that each of the storage devices including spare capacity. The method includes determining if a storage device fails, and seeking data for the data blocks on the failed storage device from of the other storage devices.

In some embodiments, the one or more processors of the first storage drive may be configured to activate a drive temperature monitor of the first storage drive in response to a manufacturer specific command, detect a temperature event of the first storage drive, and send a notification to the storage enclosure upon detecting the temperature event, the notification indicating the temperature event.

Abstract: A method includes generating a map for a storage tier. The map maps a plurality of extents to physical locations on the storage tier and is implemented as a tree with each extent to physical location mapping being one of a plurality of leaf extent nodes of the tree. Individual ones of the plurality of leaf extent nodes are compressed into small extent nodes. Different groups of the small extent nodes are associated with carrier nodes. A command that involves an extent of the plurality of extents, which is represented by a small extent node in one of the carrier nodes, is received from a host. A decompression operation is performed on the small extent node in the carrier node to provide a leaf extent node for the extent associated with the host command. An extent node operation is performed on the leaf extent node for the extent.
