Abstract: Provided is a method for quantitating a saccharide in a liquid sample. The method comprises incubating the liquid sample with 2,3-naphthalenediamine in the presence of iodine to allow a naphthimidazole group to be linked to the saccharide to obtain a first mixture; obtaining an 1H-NMR spectrum of the first mixture; and comparing, in said 1H-NMR spectrum, the intensity or integral of a proton signal corresponding to the saccharide to the intensity or integral of a proton signal corresponding to an internal standard present in the first mixture.

Abstract: Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) bearing α-glucose (α-Glc) that preferentially stimulate human invariant NKT (iNKT) cells are provided. GSLs with α-glucose (α-Glc) that exhibit stronger induction in humans (but weaker in mice) of cytokines and chemokines and expansion and/or activation of immune cells than those with α-galactose (α-Gal) are disclosed. GSLs bearing α-glucose (α-Glc) and derivatives of α-Glc with F at the 4 and/or 6 positions are provided. Methods for iNKT-independent induction of chemokines by the GSL with α-Glc and derivatives thereof are disclosed. Methods for immune stimulation in humans using GSLs with α-Glc and derivatives thereof are provided.

Abstract: A compact, transportable batch-process supertorrefaction system includes at least one supertorrefying unit, a liquid tank containing molten salt, and a wash tank including a plurality of basins containing water having different temperatures and different salinity. The liquid tank and the wash tank sequentially supply the molten salt and the water to a receiving space of the at least one supertorrefying unit to supertorrefy the biomass into charcoal and to rinse and cool the charcoal, respectively. The plurality of basins of the wash unit sequentially supply water having different temperatures and salinity to the same receiving space to gradually rinse and cool the charcoal. The biomass is not moved in the at least one supertorrfeying unit during biomass supertorrefaction. The charcoal is not moved during charcoal cooling.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of predicting the risk of a patient for developing adverse drug reactions, particularly SJS or TEN. It was discovered that an HLA-B allele, HLA-B* 1502, is associated with SJS/TEN that is induced by a variety of drugs. The correlation with HLA-B* 1502 is most significant for carbamazepine-induced SJS/TEN, wherein all the patients tested have the HLA-B* 1502 allele. In addition, another HLA-B allele, HLA-B*5801, is particularly associated with SJS/TEN induced by allopurinol. Milder cutaneous reactions, such as maculopapular rash, erythema multiforme (EM), urticaria, and fixed drug eruption, are particularly associated with a third allele, HLA-B *4601. For any of the alleles, genetic markers (e.g., HLA markers, microsatellite, or single nucleotide polymorphism markers) located between DRB1 and HLA-A region of the specific HLA-B haplotype can also be used for the test.
