摘要: A method is provided for forming a thick and hard deposit having excellent thermal shock resistance on an engine valve made of a titanium material, particularly on its face and stem end, without allowing the formation of any brittle compound layer between the deposit and the valve material. An engine valve hardfaced on its face and stem end is also provided. A powder comprising a titanium material and 1 to 90% by weight of cobalt, or at least 25% by weight of a titanium material, 1 to 50% by weight of cobalt and 1 to 50% weight of a cobalt-based alloy is fused and deposited on an engine valve mad of a titanium material (e.g., on its face), and the deposited material is aged. The powder is prepared by mixing at least two powders, or from a molten alloy containing all of its constituents, to form a thick and hard deposit having excellent thermal shock and wear resistance on, e.g., the face of the engine valve and is, therefore, of high industrial utility.

摘要: A liquid phase diffusion bonding method using an insert material such as B,C,Si and Hf having a high diffusivity and a melting point higher than that of the base metal is disclosed. During the bonding, the insert material is not melted, but the insert material and the base metal are reacted with each other in such a manner that the diffusion bonding can be carried out under a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature lower than the melting point of the insert material.

摘要: A method of hardening the surface of titanium and its alloys, and other structural metals which form hard carbides, by treating the surface thereof with a moving, discontinuous carbon arc.The metal surface to be hardened, and a carbon electrode are made opposite poles of an electric current source, and moved and/or rotated with respect to each other so that a multiplicity of discontinuous electric arcs are produced between the carbon electrode and the metal surface.Carbon particles transfer through the arc and alloy within craters of the instantly liquified and chilled substrate, producing a surface layer which, in the case of titanium, is hard and tough and adherent enough to form the working surface of abrasive cutting tools. The process improves the appearance and durability of consumer items and reduces friction and wear on machine parts.

摘要: First and second members are constructed to be disposed in an individual's body without adversely affecting the functioning of the individual's body. The first and second members may be illustratively an orthodontic bracket and an orthodontic pad. An armorphous alloy is disposed between or adjacent to the first and second members in a thin layer (e.g. three thousandths of an inch (0.003")) and is bonded, as by brazing, to the first and second members. The alloy is provided with properties of not affecting the functioning of the individual's body adversely. The alloy preferably has eutectic properties and has properties of being ductile and corrosion resistant. The alloy is preferably a metallic glass in which the primary element may be palladium. The alloy may consist of palladium, nickel and silicon. The composition of the alloy is preferably as follows:______________________________________ Element Approximate Percentage ______________________________________ Palladium Ninety percent (90%) Nickel Four Percent (4%) Silicon Six Percent (6%) ______________________________________ The alloy is not dense so that a minimal amount of material has to be used to bond the first and second members. The alloy provides a stronger bond to the first and second members than the alloys of the prior art.

摘要: A material for joining ceramics and metal plate comprises a titanium-copper type braze disposed adjacent to the ceramics, and a stress cushioning and brazing material. The material includes first and second nickel plates, and a tungsten plate between the first and second nickel plates. The first and second nickel plates and the tungsten plate operate as a stress cushioning material, while a titanium film, copper foil and the first nickel plate form the titanium-copper type braze. In the method, the ceramics, metal plate, stress cushioning and brazing material and braze are heated above a predetermined period of time under vacuum condition. In the present invention, the ceramics and the metal plate are joined with improved thermal resistance at a joint portion.
