Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide systems and methods for confirming the identity of a passenger and changing destination of a vehicle. This may include receiving dispatching instructions to pick up a first passenger at a pickup location and to drop off the first passenger at a first destination as well as authentication information for authenticating a first client computing device of the first passenger. Once the client device is authenticated and a second passenger enters the vehicle, the vehicle is maneuvered towards the first destination. While doing so, a location of the vehicle is compared to location information received from the client computing devices. A notification is sent to a dispatching server based on the comparison and a second destination location is received in response. The vehicle is then maneuvered towards the second destination instead of the first destination.

Abstract: An apparatus for measuring retro-reflectivity of a target object in an outdoor environment includes a modulator to modulate a first optical signal based on a specified modulation value, an optical emitter, coupled to the modulator, to emit the first optical signal along an optical path towards the target object, and an optical detector positioned collinearly with respect to the optical emitter. The optical detector detects a second optical signal that is retro-reflected from the target object. The apparatus includes a lock-in amplifier coupled to the modulator and the optical detector. The lock-in amplifier receives a first electrical signal from the modulator and a second electrical signal from the optical detector, and generates, based on the first electrical signal and the second electrical signal, a third electrical signal indicative of the retro-reflectivity of the target object.

Abstract: The technology relates to articulated autonomous vehicles that can potentially jackknife. To avoid or mitigate such hazardous conditions, the current state of the vehicle is evaluated against the vehicle's planned trajectory, for instance as it drives along a freeway or surface streets. When the evaluation indicates a likelihood of jackknifing, an automated braking approach is implemented using elective braking to stabilize the vehicle. The braking approach can depend on whether the situation involves tractor jackknifing or trailer jackknifing, and one or more different braking mechanisms can be employed for a selective modulation of the braking profile to address actual jackknifing or to prevent the vehicle from entering a jackknifing situation.

Abstract: Aspects of the technology relate to assisting a passenger in an autonomous vehicle without a driver. For instance, after a door of the vehicle is opened, a predetermined period of time may be waited by processors of computing devices of the vehicle. After waiting the predetermined period of time and when the vehicle's door remains open, a set of instructions for closing the vehicle's door may be played by the processors through a speaker of the vehicle. Once the door of the vehicle is closed, an announcement may be played by the processors through the speaker requesting that the passenger press a first button to initiate a ride to a destination. In response to the first button being pressed, the ride to the destination may be initiated by the processors by maneuvering the vehicle autonomously to the destination.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide methods for controlling a first vehicle having an autonomous driving mode. In one instance, sensor data generated by one or more sensors of the first vehicle may be received. A splash and characteristics of the splash may be detected from the sensor data using a classifier. A severity of a puddle may be determined based on the characteristics of the splash and a speed of a second vehicle that caused the splash. The first vehicle may be controlled based on the severity. In another instance, a location of a puddle relative to a tire of a second vehicle is estimated using sensor data generated by one or more sensors of the first vehicle. A severity of the puddle may be determined based on the estimated location. The first vehicle may be controlled based on the severity.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems and methods that utilize machine learning techniques to improve object classification in thermal imaging systems. In an example embodiment, a method is provided. The method includes receiving, at a computing device, one or more infrared images of an environment. The method additionally includes, applying, using the computing device, a trained machine learning system on the one or more infrared images to determine an identified object type in the environment by at least: determining one or more prior thermal maps associated with the environment; using the one or more prior thermal maps and the one or more infrared images, determining a current thermal map associated with the environment; and determining the identified object type based on the current thermal map. The method also includes providing the identified object type using the computing device.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to arranging a pickup between a driverless vehicle and a passenger. For instance, dispatch instructions dispatching the vehicle to a predetermined pickup area in order to pick up the passenger are received by the vehicle which begins maneuvering to the predetermined pickup area. While doing so, the vehicle receives from the passenger's client computing device the device's location. An indication that the passenger is interested in a fly-by pickup is identified. The fly-by pickup allows the passenger to safely enter the vehicle at a location outside of the predetermined pickup area and prior to the one or more processors have maneuvered the vehicle to the predetermined pickup area. The vehicle determines that the fly-by pickup is appropriate based on at least the location of the client computing device and the indication, and based on the determination, maneuvers itself in order to attempt the fly-by pickup.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide for identifying problematic areas within a service area for an autonomous vehicle transportation service. For instance, a starting location within the service area corresponding to a potential pickup location for passengers or cargo for the service may be identified. A destination within the service area may be identified. A simulation may be run in order to determine a route for a simulated vehicle to travel between the starting location and the destination. That the route includes a particular type of maneuver may be determined. A new simulation without allowing the simulated vehicle to complete the particular type of maneuver may be run. Whether the simulated vehicle reaches the destination in the new simulation may be determined. Based on the determination of whether the simulated vehicle reaches the destination in the new simulation, the starting location and destination location may be flagged as potentially problematic areas.

Abstract: Example embodiments relate to identifying defects in optical detector systems based on extent of stray light. An example embodiment includes a method. The method includes capturing, using an optical detector system, an image of a scene that includes a bright object. The method also includes determining a location of the bright object within the image. Further, the method includes determining, based on the location of the bright object within the image, an extent of stray light from the bright object that is represented in the image. In addition, the method includes determining, by comparing the extent of stray light from the bright object that is represented in the image to a predetermined threshold extent of stray light, whether one or more defects are present within the optical detector system. The predetermined threshold extent of stray light corresponds to an expected extent of stray light.

Abstract: Methods and system are provided for training and using a model to determine states of lanes of interest. For instance, image data including an image and an associated label identifying at least one traffic light, a state of the at least one traffic light, and a lane controlled by the at least one traffic light are received and used to train the model such that the model is configured to, in response to receiving an image and a lane of interest included in the image, output a lane state for the lane of interest. This model is then used by a vehicle in order to determine a state of a lane of interest. This state is then used to control the vehicle in an autonomous driving mode based on the state of the lane of interest.
