摘要: A method and apparatus for ejecting droplets from the crests of capillary waves riding on the free surface of a liquid by parametrically pumping the capillary waves with electric fields from probes located near the crests. Crest stabilizers are beneficially used to fix the spatial locations of the capillary wave crests near the probes. The probes are beneficially switchably connected to an AC voltage supply having an output that is synchronized with the crest motion. When the AC voltage is applied to the probes, the resulting electric field adds sufficient energy to the system so that the surface tension of the liquid is overcome and a droplet is ejected. The AC voltage is synchronized such that the droplet is ejected about when the electric field is near is minimum value. A plurality of droplet ejectors are arranged and the AC voltage is switchably applied so that ejected droplets form a predetermined image on a recording surface.

摘要: A device for moving an object, such as a sheet of paper or other substrate, includes a base element, a drive mechanism to move the base element in first and second directions, such as by vibration, and a plurality of flexible ratchets fixedly secured to the base element. As the base element vibrates, the ratchets advance the sheet of paper in a direction perpendicular to the direction of vibration of the base element. Pluralities of base elements and drive mechanisms can be provided to direct movement of the substrate in various directions.

摘要: An apparatus and methods for using a Variable Orifice Capillary Wave Printer are disclosed. The invention as described herein provides a capability to transfer high resolution graphical images onto a projection medium (14) with pseudo-gray-scale (i.e. variable spot-size). A standing fluid ripple wave (38) or capillary wave is generated along a narrow channel (20) at the top of an ink reservoir (16), upon the free fluid surface (27). The capillary wave (38) is spatially stablized with an elongated slotted bar (30) of anisotropically etched signal crystal silicon. Piezoelectric pushers (34) are positioned at the anti-nodes (42) of the stabilized standing capillary wave (38) to selectively restrict the narrow slots (32) etched into the slotted silicon bar (30). Selective actuation of one or more piezoelectric pusher (34) for a predetermined length of time results in the ejection of a stream of fluid droplets (12). Pseudo-gray-scale printing is achieved by independently varying the ejction period of each piezoelectric pusher (34). A low-cost, highly integrated and highly producible apparatus (10) may be created by laminating an array of selective transistor switches (36a) and an array of piezoelectric pushers (34) onto a glass substrate (36b) which is embedded in the body of the acoustic ink reservoir (16). The shortcomings of current apparatus designed for selectively addressing the anti-nodes (42) of a stabilized standing capillary wave (38) have been overcome by the Variable Orifice Capillary Wave Printer, making such a device a low-cost and highly producible alternative for the printer industry.

摘要: An ink transport comprising a perforated belt or web configured carrier having a longitudinally repetitive pattern of relatively large diameter apertures extending through it is provided for delivering a regularly refreshed supply of liquid ink to the printhead of an acoustic ink printer. Ink is loaded into the apertures from the top and/or the bottom. Furthermore, the apertures within each repeat of the aperture pattern are on centers which cause them to laterally align, on a one-for-one basis, with the individual pixel positions within a pagewidth address field. The printhead, in turn, includes one or more droplet ejectors, each of which supplies an acoustic beam which converges to a relatively sharp (i.e., narrow waist diameter) focus approximately on the free surface of the ink entrained in the apertures, and the radiation pressure exerted by each beam is modulated to acoustically eject individual droplets of ink from the apertures on command to print an image on a nearby recording medium. For regularly refreshing the ink presented to the printhead, the carrier is advanced longitudinally, suitably at a rate selected to bring successive repeats of its aperture pattern into alignment with the printhead for the printing of successive lines of the image.

摘要: Polychromatic acoustic ink printers are disclosed, including several embodiments which utilize a single printhead for ejecting droplets of ink on command from a transport which carries the different colored inks past the printhead in timed synchronism with the printing of the corresponding color separations. If desired, a diluent also may be provided to permit the printing of an intensity mask.A variety of transports are described, including single ply solid or perforated films, as well as laminated multiple ply films composed of a solid or perforated lower layer, a perforated or mesh upper layer, and, in some embodiments, one or more perforated intermediate layers. Furthermore, it is disclosed that a perforated transport may be overcoated with a patterned metallization so that an electric field can be generated to assist in controlling the droplet ejection process. Some of the transports are designed to carry the inks in a liquid state. However, others are suitable for carrying the inks in a solid state, so provision may be made for liquefying the inks, such as by heating them, as they approach the printhead or printheads.

摘要: Provision is made for selectively addressing inividual crests of traveling or standing capillary surface waves to eject droplets from the selected crests on command. To that end, the addressing mechanism of this invention locally increase the surface pressure acting on the selected crests and/or locally reduce the surface tension of the liquid within the selected crests. The preferred addressing mechanisms have sufficient spatial resolution to address a single crest substantially independently of its neighbors.Discrete addressing mechanisms having a plurality of individual addressing elements are especially attractive for liquid ink printing and similar applications, not only because their individual addressing elements may be spatially fixed, but also because the spatial frequency of their addressing elements may be matched to the spatial frequency of the capillary wave. Such frequency matching enables selected crests of the capillary wave to be addressed in parallel, such as for line printing. Preferably, the capillary wave for a printer is a spatially stabilized standing wave, so that the crests and troughs of the capillary wave are locked in predetermined spatial locations.

摘要: Disclosed is a digital memory in which data is stored by establishing perturbations in a surface of a substrate and thereafter identifying the perturbations by establishing a tunnel electron current between the surface of the substrate and a movable probe. The perturbations can be physical, electrical, or magnetic, for example, such that the tunneling electron current is affected thereby. Storage area for a bit of data can be reduced to the order of 10.sup.-4 square microns, and the volume of a 100 megabyte mass storage can be reduced to the order of a cubic centimeter.
