Abstract: Fibrous sorbent media or pads are formed from non-woven mats of thermoplastic fibers, preferably polypropylene fibers, having a mean diameter between about 0.5 microns and about 25 microns. The mats have a weight between about 2 ounces/yd2 and about 25 ounces/yd2; a thickness of at least {fraction (1/20)} of an inch; an oil absorbency ratio of at least 5 to 1 or a water absorbency ratio of at least 5 to 1. The sorbent media have first and second major surfaces with abrasion resistant, liquid permeable, integral skins and fibrous cores. The liquid permeable skins of the media are formed by melting fibers at and immediately adjacent the major surfaces of the mats to form thermoplastic melt layers which are subsequently solidified into the skins on the major surfaces of the mats. For many applications, the thermoplastic fibers of the mats are point bonded together at spaced apart locations to increase the integrity of the mats.

Abstract: A method of inertial bonding of a conductive metallic member to a fragile non-conductive member, comprising: (a) depositing a thin adherent conductive pad onto the fragile member to present a first friction creating surface: (b) forming the conductive metallic member with a second friction mating surface conforming essentially to the first friction creating surface; (c) bringing the first and second friction surfaces together with high relative movement transverse to the surfaces and with a gradually increasing forging force along an axis perpendicular to the surfaces to generate sufficient frictional heat therebetween to effect at least a galling or smearing of melted particles of said surfaces; and (d) abruptly ceasing the relative rotation and increasing forging force upon the attainment of such melted particles at the engaging interface between the surfaces.

Abstract: A method of making a combination suspension and transducer magnetic head for longitudinal recording which can be used for contact recording and flying above the media. The transducer includes a horizontal first pole piece and a horizontal and vertical sections of a second pole piece. A magnetic gap is formed between the first pole piece and the vertical section of the second pole piece. The suspension layers are formed mainly from the insulation layer that separate the first horizontal pole piece and the horizontal section of the second pole piece, and an insulation layer that covers and protects the transducer layers. The layers of the combination head are deposited on a wafer in a row and column configuration. A release layer is deposited on the substrate, first and then individual thin film layers of the transducer are deposited to form the horizontal first pole piece and horizontal section of the second pole piece which is activated by a conductor coil wound around the horizontal section. The backgap is displaced horizontally from the poletips. The wafer is then divided into rows. The vertical section of the second pole piece is formed on the end of the row in contact with its horizontal section. The substrate is removed by attacking the release layers.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for providing uranium metal with a protective coating of copper. Uranium metal is subjected to a conventional cleaning operation wherein oxides and other surface contaminants are removed, followed by etching and pickling operations. The copper coating is provided by first electrodepositing a thin and relatively porous flash layer of copper on the uranium in a copper cyanide bath. The resulting copper-layered article is then heated in an air or inert atmosphere to volatilize and drive off the volatile material underlying the copper flash layer. After the heating step an adherent and essentially non-porous layer of copper is electro-deposited on the flash layer of copper to provide an adherent, multi-layer copper coating which is essentially impervious to corrosion by most gases.

Abstract: A method and apparatus supporting broadcast and unicast transmissions in a wireless communication system including plural communication cells. A first method includes: supporting one broadcast transmission in one sub-frame of a physical resource; the one broadcast transmission includes broadcast data using a first cell identifier and supporting transmission of unicast control information using a second cell identifier in the one sub-frame of the physical resource, the first and second cell identifiers being different. A second method includes: supporting one time discontinuous broadcast transmission in one sub-frame of a radio frame of a physical resource; and supporting transmission of unicast control information in plural time-continuous sub-frames of the radio frame of the physical resource; the one sub-frame used for the one time discontinuous broadcast transmission including a first duration less than a second duration used in the plural sub-frames of the radio frame for transmitting unicast control information.
