Abstract: A method of forming a molding tool includes performing a computer aided engineering (CAE) analysis on a molding tool design. The CAE analysis predicts flow of injection molded material and a location of gas entrapment within a molding recess of the molding tool design. At least one venting design constraint is applied to the molding tool design as a function of the gas entrapment location. Also, a biomimetic shaped passageway for venting gas away from the gas entrapment location is selected from a plurality of biomimetic shaped passageways. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) CAE analysis of the molding tool design with the selected biomimetic shaped passageway is performed and modifications of the selected biomimetic shaped passageway are CFD CAE analyzed until a final biomimetic shaped passageway is determined and a molding tool with the final biomimetic shaped passageway is formed.

Abstract: A device and method of tapping an engine component to orient a spark plug includes measuring a tap pitch, measuring a first distance between a tap end surface and a full tap tooth center at a first rotational location, calculating a phantom first tap tooth based on the pitch and first distance, determining a tap rotational offset from the first location to a location where the end surface intersects the phantom first tooth, calculating a tap rotational starting orientation that is the first location minus the tap rotational offset minus a spark plug offset, rotating a tool head to the rotational starting orientation, positioning the tap so the end surface is a pitch incremental distance away from the engine component, synchronizing a rotating speed of the tool head and a feed rate to the tap thread pitch, and operating the tool to cut or form threads in the engine component.

Abstract: A method of evaluating a sheet metal stamping simulation is provided. The method may include defining elements of a finite-element mesh representing a stamped panel, operating on the elements to simulate deformation of the panel during stamping to generate, for each of the elements, incremental differential major and minor plastic strain values, applying a weighting factor to temporally adjacent pairs of the values to generate smoothed values, deriving, from the smoothed values and for each of the elements, a plurality of plastic strain incremental ratios representing plastic flow direction of the elements during the deformation, and altering colors of a map based on the ratios to represent changes in severity of plastic deformation of the stamped panel.

Abstract: A method of forming a part includes locating an insert at an angle within a mold cavity, sending a quantity of molten resin through the mold cavity to form a first melt front, and sending another quantity of molten resin through the mold cavity to form a second melt front such that the first melt front meets the second melt front at a weld line and each front flows along opposite sides of the insert. The mold cavity can define opposed internal surfaces and the insert can be disposed at an angle between the internal surfaces at the weld line. Also, one end of the insert can be fixedly located to one of the opposed internal surfaces and another end of the insert can float within the mold cavity.

Abstract: A dolly includes an actuated platform and obstruction sensor as well as a camera and a depth sensor. The eye height of a user is determined according to outputs of the camera and depth sensor. The platform is then moved to an elbow height determined based on the eye height and the depth sensor is moved to a position above the platform. In response to detecting obstruction of the obstruction sensor, the platform is lowered. Upon completion of loading, the platform is lowered to a lowest position. A stand may be retracted upon lowering of the platform to its lowest position.

Abstract: A fuel cell assembly for a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack may employ a construction in which a plastic film frame is used to frame a catalyst coated membrane within. In one advantageous embodiment, the plastic film frame is adhesive coated on one side and laminated at its inner edge to one surface of the catalyst coated membrane and at its outer edge to the flow field plate on the opposite side. In another advantageous embodiment, the plastic film frame is laminated to sealing features incorporated in a transition region in the flow field plate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for teaching and/or evaluating driving behavior of a driver of an autonomous-capable vehicle. The vehicle is operated in a manual-control mode wherein a driver has manual control, and a communication device (audio speaker, visual display, etc.) issues an instruction to the driver to perform a task. As the driver is attempting to perform the task, a sensor monitors the driver's behavior. A driver instruction module (that interfaces with the vehicle's autonomous driving module) determines a deviation between the driver's behavior and a desired behavior to perform the task. If the deviation exceeds a permissible amount, the vehicle is placed under autonomous control (control is taken away from the driver) and the task is completed in a manner that is in accordance with the desired behavior.

Abstract: Various approaches allow for shared transportation reservations and related actions to be made based on a user's proximity to a shared transportation station. Data is received concerning the user's computing device, such as a vehicle, a mobile device, an internet-connected device, or a cellular network-connected device. Approaches can use a variety of data formats, including image data, location coordinates, or wirelessly-transmitted data. Based on such data and a criterion such as a threshold proximity to the station, the user's account status is determined and access to same authorized. Via the account, numerous actions may be taken, including automatically triggering a transport mode reservation or return, prompting the user to reserve or return the shared transportation, or debiting the user per a fee associated with the transportation reservation. Further, neural network techniques may be applied to train a model for generating related recommendations.

Abstract: An intelligent bicycle sharing system, or other vehicle sharing system, is able to provide helpful bicycle availability indications based on historical data and user proximity. Historical data can be collected over time as users use the bicycle sharing system. For example, the historical data may include how many bicycles are checked at out a given time and how many remain at a given location. In some embodiments, an indication may be provided to the user as the user approaches the vehicle sharing system. The indication may provide information regarding the availability of bicycles.

Abstract: A method of controlling application of material onto a substrate includes ejecting atomized droplets from an array of micro-applicators while the array of micro-applicators cyclically moves about at least one axis. The atomized droplets from each of the plurality of micro-applicators overlap with atomized droplets from adjacent micro-applicators and a diffuse overlap of deposited atomized droplets from adjacent micro-applicators is provided on a surface of the substrate. The array of micro-applicators cyclically rotates back and forth around the at least one axis and/or moves back and forth parallel to the at least one axis. For example, the at least one axis can be a central axis of the array of micro-applicators, a length axis of the array of micro-applicators, a width axis of the array of micro-applicators, and the like. Also, the array of micro-applicators can be part of an ultrasonic material applicator used to paint vehicles.
