摘要: In this disclosure, an ion-conducting membrane (10), a component (100) having the ion-conducting membrane (10) and a process for making the membrane (10) and the component (100) are disclosed. The ion-conducting membrane (10) includes a homogenous blend (12) and one or more additives (14). The selected one or more polymers are present in a mass-percentage in a range from 1% to 40. The present ion-conducting membrane (10) simultaneously increases the power and efficiency of the devices by combining advances in materials chemistry, nanotechnology, and manufacturing. The present ion-conducting membrane (10) overcomes limitations in the currently known technologies without compromising the advantageous properties. The present membrane (10) provides non-linear performance enhancement in electrochemical devices that leads to overall system level cost reduction.

摘要: Methods for forming a metal oxide electrolyte improve ionic conductivity. Some of those methods involve applying a first metal compound to a substrate, converting that metal compound to a metal oxide, applying a different metal compound to the metal oxide, and converting the different metal compound to form a second metal oxide. That substrate may be in nanobar form that conforms to an orientation imparted by a magnetic field or an electric field applied before or during the converting. Electrolytes so formed can be used in solid oxide fuel cells, electrolyzers, and sensors, among other applications.

摘要: The present disclosure is directed towards the design of electrochemical cells for use in high pressure or high differential pressure operations. The electrochemical cells of the present disclosure have non-circular external pressure boundaries, i.e., the cells have non-circular profiles. In such cells, the internal fluid pressure during operation is balanced by the axial tensile forces developed in the bipolar plates, which prevent the external pressure boundaries of the cells from flexing or deforming. That is, the bipolar plates are configured to function as tension members during operation of the cells. To function as an effective tension member, the thickness of a particular bipolar plate is determined based on the yield strength of the material selected for fabricating the bipolar plate, the internal fluid pressure in the flow structure adjacent to the bipolar plate, and the thickness of the adjacent flow structure.

摘要: Disclosed herein are a method of manufacturing a fuel cell, and a fuel cell manufactured according to the method. The method includes bonding a sub-gasket, provided with an air inlet and a hydrogen inlet, to a side surface of a three-layer membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) including an electrolyte membrane, a cathode located on one surface of the electrolyte membrane, and an anode located on the other surface of the electrolyte membrane; stacking a gas diffusion layer, which comprises an antioxidant precursor, on at least one of the cathode and the anode and preparing a five-layer MEA; and applying a current to the five-layer MEA and moving an antioxidant, which is derived from the antioxidant precursor, to the electrolyte membrane.

摘要: A fuel cell stack is provided comprising a plurality of fuel cells comprising a membrane electrode assembly and at least one gas diffusion layer, which fuel cells are divided into at least one first fuel cell segment having a portion of the plurality of fuel cells and a second fuel cell segment having a different portion of the plurality of fuel cells, wherein the first fuel cell segment and the second fuel cell segment are arranged in a common fuel cell cascade, wherein the first fuel cell segment comprises a first collector inlet line for an operating medium and a first collector outlet lined which is formed integrally with a second collector inlet line of the second fuel cell segment and wherein the second fuel cell segment comprises a second collector outlet line. The membrane electrode assemblies and/or the gas diffusion layers inside the second fuel cell segment are designed in such a way that they are more water-repellent than those of the first fuel cell segment. A fuel cell system comprising such a fuel cell stack is also provided.

摘要: A fuel cell assembly for a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack may employ a construction in which a plastic film frame is used to frame a catalyst coated membrane within. In one advantageous embodiment, the plastic film frame is adhesive coated on one side and laminated at its inner edge to one surface of the catalyst coated membrane and at its outer edge to the flow field plate on the opposite side. In another advantageous embodiment, the plastic film frame is laminated to sealing features incorporated in a transition region in the flow field plate.
