摘要: A method of forming metal castings, including positioning a first end of a structural member in a first mold cavity and a second end of the structural member in a second mold cavity. The first and second mold cavities being fluidly coupled to a reservoir of molten metal. Applying a main pressure to the molten metal in the reservoir to force the molten metal into the first mold cavity and the second mold cavity. Then, applying a first auxiliary pressure to the first mold cavity and a second auxiliary pressure to the second mold cavity to density the casting formed in the first mold cavity and the second mold cavity. Also, a method for casting including maintaining a main pressure at or less than an initial, mold-filling pressure after first and second mold cavities have been filled. Additionally, a method for detecting whether a first mold cavity is sufficiently filled with molten metal by monitoring a moveable element.

摘要: A vehicle space frame for constructing a motor vehicle includes a body module and a front module. The body module includes a pair of laterally spaced, longitudinally extending main side rail structures and a pair of rearward-most upright structures each being connected to a respective main side rail structure and extending upwardly therefrom to form a pair of rearward-most pillars thereon. The body module further includes a pair of hydroformed upper longitudinal members each being defined by an outwardly deformed tubular metallic wall fixed in a predetermined irregular exterior surface configuration and each including a pillar-forming portion and a longitudinally extending portion. Each pillar-forming portion is connected to a respective main side rail structure and extends upwardly therefrom to form an A pillar and each longitudinally extending portion is connected at an opposite end portion thereof with an associated one of the, rearward-most pillars, thereby defining, a longitudinal length between the associated A- and rearward-most pillars. A plurality of connecting structures are included in the body module and are constructed and arranged to secure the main side rail structures, the upper longitudinal members, and the pairs of pillars in laterally spaced fixed relation. The front module includes a pair of front lower side rail structures, a pair of front upper side rail structures and front connecting structure. The front connecting structure is constructed and arranged to connect the front lower side rail structures to one another in laterally spaced relation and to connect the front upper side rail structures to one another in laterally spaced relation. The front module is rigidly fixed to the body module by rigidly interconnecting each front lower side rail structure with a respective main side rail structure and each front upper side rail structure to the associated A pillar of a respective hydroformed upper longitudinal member at a position spaced upwardly from the associated main side rail structure.

摘要: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming an elongated tubular metal member from a tubular metal blank. The method comprises: i) placing a tubular metal blank having a generally oval cross-section into a die cavity and orienting the tubular metal blank such that a relatively larger cross-sectional dimension of the generally oval cross-section extends generally in a direction of the relatively larger cross-sectional dimension of the die cavity and such that a relatively smaller cross-sectional dimension of the generally oval cross-section extends generally in a direction of the relatively smaller cross-sectional dimension of the die cavity; ii) engaging and sealing opposite ends of the tubular metal blank; and iii) injecting fluid under pressure into the tubular metal blank so as to expand the tubular metal blank into conformity with the surfaces defining the die cavity and thereby transform the tubular metal blank into the elongated tubular metal member.

摘要: A method of hydroforming an angled tubular part comprising disposing an angled metal tubular blank within a generally correspondingly angled die cavity, the tubular blank having an exterior surface, wherein at an angled portion of the tubular blank, the exterior surface has a concave surface portion and a convex surface portion on generally opposite sides of the tubular blank, sealing opposite ends of the tubular blank, providing high pressure fluid to an interior of the tubular blank, expanding the blank into conformity with surfaces defining the die cavity as a result of said providing. Force is applied to at least one end of the tubular blank so as to create longitudinal flow of metal material within the tubular blank to maintain a wall thickness of the blank within a predetermined range wherein a greater amount of force is applied to a portion of the tubular blank which is longitudinally aligned with the convex surface portion of the tubular blank in comparison with the amount of force applied for a portion of the tubular blank which is longitudinally aligned with the concave surface portion of the tubular blank so as to create a greater amount of flow of metal material toward portions of the tubular blank adjacent the convex surface portion in comparison with portions of the tubular blank adjacent the concave surface portion, so as to inhibit wrinkle formation at the portions of the tubular blank adjacent the concave surface portion. A hydroforming die apparatus is disclosed for practicing the method as well as the angled tubular part which is made by the method and apparatus.

摘要: A frame assembly for a motor vehicle and method of manufacturing the same. The method comprises the steps of: forming a rearward frame module, forming a forward frame module, and forming a central frame module comprising a pair of longitudinal central frame siderails. Each of the central frame siderails are constructed by 1) forming a sheet of metallic material into a longitudinal member having a generally U-shaped transverse cross section including a base portion and a pair of leg portions, 2) engaging opposite longitudinal ends of the longitudinal member and pulling the longitudinal ends in opposite directions with respect to the longitudinal extent of the longitudinal member in order to stretch the longitudinal member so that the metallic material forming the longitudinal member reaches its yield state; and 3) bending the longitudinal member having the U-shaped cross-section at two longitudinally spaced locations so that 1) at a first of the locations a) the base portion is bent generally within its plane, b) one of the leg portions is stretched, and c) an opposite one of the leg portions is compressed, and so that 2) at a second of the locations a) the base portion is bent generally within its plane, b) the one of the leg portions is compressed, and c) the opposite one of the leg portions is stretched. The forward frame module and the rearward frame module are then to opposite ends of the central frame module.
