Abstract:
An apparatus for measuring the linewidth of a laser is disclosed in which the linewidth of a laser is measured in a wide range from a narrow linewidth to a wide linewidth by utilizing frequency-shifted rays based on a stimulated Brillouin scattering within an optical fiber in an easy and efficient manner. The apparatus according to the present invention includes: an optical signal generating and splitting means for generating optical signals under test, and for splitting them into two sets of signals; a frequency shifting means for amplifying the optical frequency of the optical source of the optical signal generating and splitting means, and then, irradiating the amplified signals into an optical fiber so as to shift the frequency based on a stimulated Brillouin phenomenon; a leading means for minimizing a loss of the frequency shifted rays outputted in a direction opposite to that of original laser beams of the frequency shifting means so as to leading them in a certain direction; and a spectrum analyzing means for receiving the original rays from the optical signal generating and splitting means and for receiving the frequency-shifted rays from the leading means so as to stimulate beatings and to analyze the beaten spectra. The apparatus is applied to measuring the linewidth and channel interval of a laser used in wavelength division multiplexing optical communications.
Abstract:
A wavelength-division multiplexing optical communication system and a method for measuring optical performance of an output signal for the system. The optical communication system includes: a service-provider device; a local node; and a plurality of subscriber devices. The service-provider device includes: a plurality of first optical transceivers; a first optical multiplexer/demultiplexer (OD/OM) connected to the plurality of first optical transceivers; and a seed-light source providing seed light. Each subscriber device includes a second optical transceiver. The local node connects the service-provider device and the plurality of subscriber devices to each other using a DWDM link comprising: a second multiplexer/demultiplexer (OD/OM); and a single-mode optical fiber for transmission. Here, the optical intensity of an output signal of the second optical transceiver is determined by compensating for the value of the loss caused when the output signal passes through the second OD/OM of the local node.

Provided is an optical network in which a wavelength division multiplexing-based optical transmission scheme is implemented. An apparatus for cross-connecting an optical path includes a path switch including a plurality of input terminals receiving optical signals from other nodes, and a plurality of output terminals sending the optical signals to the other nodes, the path switch switching the path of the optical signal so that the optical signal input via one of the input terminals is output to one of the output terminals; and a wavelength converter converting a wavelength of the optical signal input via the input terminal and outputting the wavelength-converted optical signal to the output terminal according to a switching result of the path switch. Thus, inefficient use of a network resource due to wavelength collision can be prevented, the path can be automatically cross-connected and thus quickly established, path switching and branch combination can be performed irrespective of wavelength, and switching can be performed irrespective of direction.

Various embodiments of the present invention include enabling, during a calibration phase, a counter to count one less than a number of clock periods associated with a determined offset. The counted number of the clock periods is stored in calibration memory. In a conversion phase, inverted outputs are loaded from the calibration memory to the counter, where the counter is enabled to count the clock periods to determine a digital equivalent value of an analog signal amplitude.
