A color image and video encoding and/or decoding apparatus, method, and medium using inter-color-component prediction in accordance with an encoding mode are provided. The encoding apparatus for encoding an original image including at least two color image components, includes: a residue generation unit, if the encoding mode is inter mode, generating a temporal residue by obtaining the difference of a current image and a prediction image obtained by estimating a motion in units of blocks between the current image and a previous image of each color component; a residue color prediction unit encoding the temporal residue of the residue generation unit, by performing residue inter-color-component prediction; an intra color prediction unit, if the encoding mode is intra mode, encoding the original image by performing inter-color-component prediction of the original image; and an entropy encoding unit generating a bitstream by entropy encoding the result value of the residue color prediction unit or the intra color prediction unit. According to the apparatus, method, and medium, a color image or video data can be directly compressed effectively without a conventional color transform process. Furthermore, by using the correlation of image components, redundant information between color components varying with respect to the encoding mode is removed so that the encoding efficiency can be enhanced.

The image data encoding method includes: converting and quantizing pixel values of a block of image data to form a conversion block of image data; determining a classification mode used to classify the conversion block into a first region having one or more coefficients other than 0, and a second region having all coefficients of 0, based on a diagonal of the conversion block; and generating bit streams for the coefficients of the first region according to the determined classification mode and a first bit depth indicating a bit number required to binarize coefficients of the conversion block. The image data encoding method can increase the compression rate and perform encoding in real time while not degrading an image visibly.

There are provided an apparatus and method for performing dynamic capacitance compensation (DCC) in a liquid crystal display (LCD). The DCC apparatus includes: a first line buffer reading and temporarily storing pixel values of an image for each line; an encoder transforming and quantizing the pixel values stored for each line for each block and generating bit streams; a memory storing the generated bit streams; a decoder decoding the bit streams stored in the memory for the each block and outputting the decoded bit streams; a second line buffer reading and temporarily storing the decoded pixel values for the each block; and a compensation pixel value detector detecting a compensation pixel value for each pixel, from pixel value differences between pixel values of a current frame stored in the first line buffer and pixel values of a previous frame stored in the second line buffer. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the number of pins of a memory interface by reducing the number of memory device for storing pixel values of image data, required for performing DCC of a LCD, resulting in minimizing a chip size, and to enhance compression efficiency without visual deterioration in images.

The system may include a bitrate adaptation unit determining a maximum length of a prefix using a compression bitrate of the video data, a binarization unit dividing the video data into a prefix and a suffix according to the determined maximum length of the prefix and binarizing the video data, and an arithmetic encoding unit performing an arithmetic encoding on the binarized video data. The video data may be encoded/decoded using binary arithmetic encoding/decoding by determining the maximum length of the prefix, an order of an exponential Golomb code, and the number of contexts based on the compression bitrate. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain high encoding efficiency regardless of a range of the desired compression bitrate.
