In one approach, the method may involve, in response to detecting an Authorized Shared Access (ASA) beacon signal on a frequency common to each network entity on a given ASA channel, extracting frequency information from the ASA beacon signal, wherein the ASA beacon signal comprises a single frequency network (SFN) beacon signal. In another approach, the method may involve, in response to detecting an ASA beacon signal on a frequency common to each network entity on a given ASA channel, extract frequency information from the ASA beacon signal, wherein timing correlates with an operating frequency for the ASA beacon signal.

In an aspect, P2P communication on an unlicensed spectrum may be established and maintained with network assistance. In one design, a user equipment (UE) may communicate with a wide area network (WAN) to establish P2P communication with at least one other UE on a first frequency band that is not licensed to the WAN. For example, the UE may receive an assignment of at least one frequency channel in the first frequency band for P2P communication. The UE may then communicate peer-to-peer with the other UE(s) on the at least one frequency channel. The UE may also communicate with the WAN to maintain P2P communication with the other UE(s), e.g., to switch to another frequency channel if necessary.

In one example, there is provided a method, operable by a network entity (e.g., evolved Node B), that may involve communicating with another network entity to determine parameters of a quiet period, the parameters comprising at least one of when the quiet period occurs and duration of the quiet period. The method may involve transmitting a reference signal in a first channel exclusively during a first plurality of subframes of a first frame period, wherein the first frame period further includes a quiet period during which no signals are transmitted, and performing during the quiet period a sensing operation with respect to the first channel.
