Abstract:
The invention provides the compounds of formula ( ): and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, A, X, Y, a, b and n are as defined herein. Also disclosed are methods for making the compounds of formula (I) and their use in treating or preventing diseases associated with cell overproliferation and dysfunctional sphingolipid signal transduction. The invention also encompasses the use of the compounds in combination with an apoptosis-signaling ligand, such as Fas ligand. Preferably, the Fas ligand is administered in the form of a gene therapy agent.
Abstract:
A mobile payment platform and service provides a fast, easy way to make payments by users of mobile devices. The platform also interfaces with nonmobile channels and devices such as e-mail, instant messenger, and Web. In an implementation, funds are accessed from an account holder's mobile device such as a mobile phone or a personal digital assistant to make or receive payments. Financial transactions may be conducted on a person-to-person (P2P) or person-to-merchant (P2M) basis where each party is identified by a unique indicator such as a telephone number or bar code. Transactions may be requested through any number of means including SMS messaging, Web, e-mail, instant messenger, a mobile client application, an instant messaging plug-in application or “widget.” The mobile client application, resident on the mobile device, simplifies access and performing financial transactions in a fast, secure manner.
Abstract:
In a mobile payment system, registered users or members may send payment to other member or unregistered users or nonmembers. In a specific implementation, a person-to-person payment system allows existing members of a payment system to send funds to nonmembers with the intent that the nonmember becomes a member. This ability of a payment system may be referred to as “viral” because it promotes new member registrations in an exponential spreading fashion.
Abstract:
Methods for determining methylation profiles of single polynucleotide molecules, especially genomic DNA molecules, by using sequence specificity and methylation sensitivity of restriction endonucleases and other proteins that selectively bind to methylated or unmethylated residues.
Abstract:
Laminar flow of a carrier liquid and polymeric molecules through micro-channels is used to straighten the polymeric molecules and attach the straightened molecules to a wall of the micro-channel for subsequent treatment and analysis. Micro-channels can be manufactured using an elastic molding material. One micro-channel embodiment provides fluid flow using a standard laboratory centrifuge.
Abstract:
The present invention relates, in general, to toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mutations and, in particular, to a method of assessing the susceptibility of an individual to atherosclerosis and to a method of treating an individual identified as being at increased risk.
Abstract:
An interface controller for managing operation of a plurality of devices via a wide area network is provided. Each of the devices has a unique communication protocol associated therewith. A network communications layer is provided for communicating with the plurality of devices via the wide area network and a client application associated with the plurality of devices. An information processing layer is also provided for communicating with the network communications layer. The information processing layer has a set of objects corresponding to each of the plurality of devices. The information processing layer is also for interacting with a data access layer on behalf of each of the plurality of devices using the corresponding objects. Interaction between the information processing layer and the data access layer on behalf of all of the plurality of devices is governed by a single set of rules.
Abstract:
An interactive training application has three components: a lesson engine, a lesson delivery system, and a lesson authoring tool. The lesson engine runs an interactive, multimedia training exercise based on the contents of a lesson file, which comprises a plurality of pages. Each page includes a navigation item, associated with another page, and a reference to multimedia content. The lesson delivery system displays a menu of lessons to a student, fetches a lesson file corresponding to the student's selection, and invokes the lesson engine upon the lesson file. The lesson authoring tool provides a graphical interface for inputting and editing storyboards, from which the lesson authoring tool is configured for generating a lesson file.
Abstract:
A bone plate system for use in an “open door” laminoplasty procedure, including a bone plate, a first fixation element, and at least one second fixation element. The bone plate is elongated and has a generally curved shape such that the plate has an associated radius of curvature. The plate is sized and dimensioned to span a gap between a pair of bony segments, for example a pair of bony segments constituting a divided lamina. The first and second fixation elements are each configured to securely attach the bone plate to the bony segments. The bone plate has a first end including a generally U-shaped slot extending therein such that the open end of the slot comprises a first terminal end of the plate.
Abstract:
A lightweight, portable, interchangeable and effective shield that will protect from radiation during the radioactive seed insertion and positioning in brachytherapy. The shield is attached to the matrix used to position and guide the needles with the radioactive seeds. The shield minimizes the radiation exposure as much as reasonably possible because any amount of radiation exposure carries a risk to the exposed individual.
