摘要: A vehicle safety system (10) includes a first vehicle occupant safety device (50) including a first pyrotechnic device (60) that is electrically energizable in response to a first actuation signal (76). The system also includes a second vehicle occupant safety device (50) including a second pyrotechnic device that is electrically energizable in response to a second actuation signal (80). The system includes at least one sensor (14-28) for sensing a first occupant or vehicle condition and for providing a first output signal indicative of the sensed first condition. An electronic control unit (ECU) (30) receives the first output signal (14-28) and in response to the first output signal determines whether one or both of the first and second safety devices should be actuated. An radio frequency (RF) transmitter (40) electrically connected with the ECU (30) is selectively actuatable by the ECU to transmit first and second individually coded RF signals (72, 80). The system (10) includes a first RF receiver (64) electrically connected with the first safety device (50) for receiving the first individually coded RF signal (72) and for providing a first actuation signal (74) for energizing the first pyrotechnic device. The system (10) also includes a second RF receiver electrically connected with the second safety device for receiving the second individually coded RF signal (80) and for providing a second actuation signal for energizing the second pyrotechnic device.

摘要: An apparatus (10) for absorbing energy in the event of a vehicle collision comprises a structural member (12, 38) of a vehicle (14). A pyrotechnic device (50) is mounted adjacent to the structural member (12, 38). The pyrotechnic device (50) is actuatable to generate combustion products and to direct the combustion products into engagement with the structural member (12, 38) to weaken the structural member. The weakening of the structural member (12, 38) enables controlled deformation of the structural member in the event of application to the structural member of force exceeding a predetermined amount.

摘要: An apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) and a container (16) which contains a source of inflation fluid. A valve (30) is located outside the container (16) in an inflation fluid flow path extending from the container (16) to the protection device (14). An initiator (20) is actuatable to initiate a flow of the inflation fluid from the container (16) to the valve (30) along the flow path. The valve (30) includes a metering member (70) and a thermostatic metal element (72). The thermostatic metal element (72) engages the metering member (70) to move the metering member (70) in the flow path under the influence of changes in the ambient temperature prior to initiation of the flow of inflation fluid from the container (16) to the valve (30).

The apparatus (14) further includes a source (16) of inflation fluid and a device (62) that is actuatable to regulate a flow of the inflation fluid from the source (16) to the protection device (14). A cover structure (40) is configured to cover the protection device (14) at a location that is spaced from the occupant when the occupant is not out-of-position. A sensor (50) senses a force (F) applied to the cover structure (40) by the occupant when the occupant is out-of-position. A controller (64) responds to the sensor (50) by controlling the actuatable device (62) with reference to the force (F) applied to the cover structure (40) by the out-of-position occupant.

The vehicle occupant protection device (14) comprises a pair of overlying panels (40 and 42) that have overlapping portions secured together along at least a portion of the periphery of the panels to form a substantially airtight volume defined by the panels. The panels (40 and 42) are made of gas impermeable elastomeric material.

摘要: An apparatus (10) includes a pressure vessel (16) comprising a source of inflation fluid, and a solenoid valve (24) which regulates an outlet flow of the inflation fluid from the pressure vessel (16). The solenoid valve (24) normally has an open condition providing an initial outlet flow area. The apparatus (10) responds to a vehicle crash by controlling the solenoid valve (24) in a selected one of a plurality of differing stages corresponding to a plurality of differing conditions. The different stages include a stage in which the solenoid valve (24) is not shifted from the open condition, and further include a stage in which the solenoid valve (24) is shifted to a further opened condition providing a subsequent outlet flow area greater than the initial outlet flow area.
