A continuous process is described for manufacturing a wide variety of zeolites having selected crystal sizes and other desired characteristics. Selected raw materials are fed to a precursor tank of relatively large capacity, wherein the resultant zeolite precursor slurry is held at temperatures of up to 180.degree. F. for 4-16 hours, with high shear agitation, as an induction period. The slurry is sent to a plurality of crystallization tanks before it possesses a total solids content exceeding 10% by weight and a crystalline content exceeding 15% by weight of the total solids content. The crystallization tanks are preferably operated in two stages. The first crystallizing stage is held at a temperature of 180.degree.-250.degree. F. for 2-72 hours. The second crystallizing stage is held at a temperature greater than 250.degree. F. for 2-16 hours.

A new zeolite, designated ZSM-22, is disclosed and claimed. The new zeolite has the composition, in the anhydrous state, expressed in terms of mole ratios of oxides as follows:(x)Q.sub.2 O:(y)M.sub.2/n O:(z)L.sub.2 O.sub.3 :100SiO.sub.2wherein Q.sub.2 O is the oxide form of an organic compound containing an element of Group 5-B (as defined in the Table of the Elements--National Bureau of Standards, Fischer Scientific Co. Catalog No. 5-702-10), e.g., N or P, preferably N, containing at least one alkyl or aryl group having at least 2 carbon atoms, M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal having a valence n, e.g., Na, K, Cs or Li and wherein x=0.01-2.0, y=0-2.0, z=0-5, and L=Al. The new zeolite, ZSM-22, can be used in catalytic dewaxing of petroleum stocks in the presence or absence of added hydrogen.

An improved catalyst composition is disclosed for converting synthesis gas to hydrocarbon mixtures. The catalyst comprises an iron-containing, Fischer-Tropsch catalyst and a crystalline zeolite having a silica-to-alumina ratio of greater than 200 (including zeolites containing essentially no alumina) and an (R.sub.2 O+M.sub.2 /.sub.n O):SiO.sub.2 rate of less than 1.1:1 where M is a metal other than a metal of Group IIIA, n is the valence of said metal, and R is an alkyl ammonium radical, said organosilicate being characterized by a specified X-ray diffraction pattern.

Straight-chain hydrocarbons and slightly branched chain hydrocarbons are selectively converted utilizing highly siliceous porous crystalline materials of the zeolite type having SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ratio of greater than 200, unique molecular sieving properties and superior resistance to ammonia deactivation. The catalyst preferably contains acidic cations and can also contain a component having a hydrogenation/dehydrogenation function. The process of this invention is particularly useful for the dewaxing of hydrocarbon oils, including removal of high freezing point paraffins from jet fuel to lower freezing point, as well as improving the octane rating of naphtha fractions.
