Abstract: A sensor system for determining a condition associated with a piston rod of a reciprocating system includes an interrogator system having a first antenna. The sensor system further includes a second antenna separated from the first antenna by an air gap distance. The second antenna is configured to be coupled to the piston rod of the reciprocating system. The second antenna is a patch antenna and is configured to communicate with the first antenna through a range of translational movement relative to the first antenna. The sensor system further includes a radio frequency sensor coupled to the second antenna. The radio frequency sensor is configured to be coupled to the piston rod of the reciprocating system, measure a characteristic associated with the piston rod of the reciprocating system, and transmit data associated with the characteristic to the first antenna of the interrogator system through the second antenna.

Abstract: A radio frequency (RF) die package includes a switch assembly comprising an RF transmission line and a plurality of conductive mounting pads formed on a first substrate. A switching mechanism selectively couples a first portion of the RF transmission line to a second portion of the RF transmission line. An inverted ground plane assembly is coupled to the plurality of conductive mounting pads such that an electromagnetic field generated between the RF transmission line and the inverted ground plane assembly does not permeate the first substrate in a region of the switch assembly proximate the switching mechanism.

Abstract: A wireless actuator circuit configured to actuate a micro electromechanical system (MEMS) switch is provided. The wireless actuator circuit includes a transmitter portion and a receiver portion operatively coupled to the transmitter portion. The transmitter portion includes an oscillator device configured to generate a signal at a determined frequency and a first antenna operatively coupled to the oscillator device to receive a modulated signal. Further, the receiver portion includes a second antenna configured to receive the modulated signal from the transmitter portion, a radio frequency power detector configured to detect the modulated signal and a comparator configured to produce a control signal in response to the modulated signal detected by the radio frequency power detector to toggle the MEMS switch.

Abstract: The present embodiments are directed towards the optical control of switching an electrical assembly. For example, in an embodiment, an electrical package is provided. The electrical package generally includes a micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) device configured to interface with an electrical assembly, the MEMS device being operable to vary the electrical assembly between a first electrical state and a second electrical state, a MEMS device driver in communication with the MEMS device and being operable to produce high voltage switching logic from an electrical signal, and an optical detector in communication with the MEMS device driver and configured to produce the electrical signal from an optical signal produced by a light source in response to an applied current-based electrical control signal.

Abstract: A rotary machine includes a rotatable shaft and a retaining ring coupled to, and at least partially extending about, the rotatable shaft. The rotatable shaft defines a longitudinal axis. The rotatable shaft and the retaining ring define an annular cavity. The rotatable shaft and the retaining ring each include a radially outer surface. The rotary machine also includes a monitoring system including a stationary reader-antenna positioned proximate the retaining ring and a radio frequency (RF) coupler. The RF coupler includes at least one flexible antenna band coupled to, and extending over, the radially outer surface of the retaining ring. The flexible antenna band is configured to establish RF coupling with the stationary reader-antenna. A sensor die is coupled to the flexible antenna band. The sensor die extends into the substantially annular cavity and the sensor die is also coupled to the radially outer surface of the rotatable shaft.

Abstract: The present disclosure is generally related to a fault isolation sensor system for use with determining whether a potential fault is more likely to be on a rotor side or a stator side. The measurement signals are transmitted from the rotor antenna to the stator antenna, and then from the stator antenna to a controller. The controller is configured to monitor the measurement signals. If the measurement signal is outside of a predetermined range or past a predetermined threshold, then the stator antenna can be interrogated with an interrogation signal with a reflected signal being compared with the interrogation signal and a ratio thereof being used to identify the potential side of the fault.

Abstract: A method includes obtaining an active feature layer having a first surface bearing one or more active feature areas. A first capacitor plate of a first capacitor is formed on an interior surface of a cap. A second capacitor plate of the first capacitor is formed on an exterior surface of the cap. The first capacitor plate of the first capacitor overlays and is spaced apart from the second capacitor plate of the first capacitor along a direction that is orthogonal to the exterior surface of the cap to form the first capacitor. The cap is coupled with the first surface of the active feature layer such that the second capacitor plate of the first capacitor is in electrical communication with at least a first active feature of the active feature layer. The cap is bonded with the passive layer substrate.

Abstract: A method for providing overspeed protection for a gas turbine engine having an engine shaft includes monitoring, via an overspeed protection system, a torque of the engine shaft. The method also includes determining, via the overspeed protection system, at least one additional condition of the engine shaft. Further, the method includes determining, via the overspeed protection system, an overspeed condition of the gas turbine engine when the torque of the engine shaft drops below a torque threshold and the at least one additional condition of the engine shaft is indicative of the gas turbine engine being in an operational state. Thus, the overspeed condition is indicative of an above normal rotational speed of the engine shaft. In addition, the method includes initiating a shutdown procedure for the gas turbine engine in response to the determined overspeed condition to reduce the rotational speed of the engine shaft.

Abstract: A measuring system is disclosed. The measuring system includes a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device including a piezoelectric substrate and a first and second electrode disposed on a surface of the piezoelectric substrate, and a measuring device communicatively coupled to the first electrode via a first probe and the second electrode via a second probe and configured to apply an electrical signal to the first and second electrode to generate an incident bulk acoustic wave within the piezoelectric substrate, detect at least a first reflected bulk acoustic wave and a second reflected bulk acoustic wave at the first and second electrode, and calculate a thickness between a first interface corresponding to the first reflected bulk acoustic wave and a second interface corresponding to the second reflected bulk acoustic wave based on a time elapsed between detecting the first and second reflected bulk acoustic waves.
