A microprocessor is used to control the temperature of a laser emitter and thereby regulate the wavelength of optical signals from the laser. A serial interface in the microprocessor provides input and output lines to a host device, and temperature lookup tables are stored in nonvolatile memory. Control logic processes information stored in the memory as well as information on operating conditions of the laser emitter to precisely control the temperature of the laser emitter. A thermo-electric cooler adjusts the temperature of the laser emitter.

An integrated post-amplifier and laser driver assembly is provided that includes a digital control interface for communication with an external digital IC controller having an I2C bus configured to receive signal parameter programming input from a user. The PA/LD includes one or more DACs which communicate with the digital control interface by way of a glue logic module. A memory is provided in the PA/LD that communicates with the DACs by way of the glue logic module and stores an algorithm for facilitating implementation of changes to signal parameters of one or more signals by way of the DACs. Signal parameter programming instructions are received at the PA/LD from a user by way of the I2C bus, and/or from the internally coded algorithm, and are used by the DACs to facilitate implementation of changes to signal parameters of one or more signals.

An EMI shielding mechanism for use with an electronic module, such as an opto-electronic transceiver module, is disclosed. The EMI shielding mechanism includes a plurality of shielding tabs disposed on an outside face of the module. When the module is fully disposed in a port of a host device, the shielding tabs contact an edge of the port, thus reducing the amount of EMI radiation emitted form that edge. The shielding tabs are angled so that when the module is fully disposed in the port, a portion of the shielding tabs is inside the port and a portion is outside of the port. The angled shielding tabs provide a spring force which assists a user to extract the module from the port.

Systems and methods are disclosed measuring the turn-on and turn-off times of an optoelectronic transceiver's transmitter circuitry. The method includes generating a two bit sequences from separate bit sequence generators using the same controlling pattern. The first bit sequence is transmitted through an optoelectronic device and compared with corresponding bit groups in the second bit sequence. The optoelectronic device is disabled and a count of compared bit groups is kept until the comparison indicates that the optoelectronic device is completely off. Using the count and one or more of the bit groups, a turn-off time is calculated. Alternatively, the method is used to calculate a turn-on time. The optoelectronic device is enabled and a count is kept from the time the device is enabled to when the comparison of the corresponding bit groups indicates that the optoelectronic device is completely on.

The polyvinyl alcohol used to make the protective coating has an average molecular weight of ≧ about 60,000 g/mol and a hydrolysis degree of ≧95% and the at least one polyvinyl alcohol layer is dried by heating at temperatures of about 150° C. or less to form the protective coating after applying the polyvinyl alcohol layer. The other polymers are less soluble in water than polyvinyl alcohol but are easily removed with organic solvent.
