There are also disclosed a method of recording pits on such a recording medium, and an apparatus for recording data on and/or reproducing the same from the recording medium. The apparatus comprises a light source for irradiating a light output to the recording medium; a photoelectric converter for receiving the light emitted from the light source and reflected from or transmitted through the recording medium, and converting the received light into an RF signal; a signal converter for converting the output RF signal of the photoelectric converter into a binary signal corresponding to the pit formed on the recording medium; and a detector for detecting the servo area on the recording medium on the basis of the phase deviation of the binary signal outputted from the signal conversion means; wherein data is recorded or reproduced while a servo action is executed in accordance with the servo byte in the servo area detected by teh detector.

The recording medium has tracks formed at such a pitch that at least two tracks are scanned simultaneously by a spot of a light beam irradiated onto the recording surface. Each track has data composed of wobble pits formed at positions deviated from the track center and a multiplicity of pits formed exactly on the track center, wherein the multiple pits and the wobble pits are disposed successively. The apparatus comprises an optical detector and a signal discriminator. The optical detector has first and second adjacent light receiving areas divided along the tangential direction of the tracks and serving to receive the return light reflected from the optical recording medium. The signal discriminator comprises a subtracter for calculating the difference between the output detection signals of the first and second light receiving areas, and an adder for calculating the sum of such output detection signals. The signal discriminator discriminates the recorded data of the optical recording medium in accordance with the result of the combined calculation of the difference signal and the sum signal obtained respectively from the subtracter and the adder.

The light passes through a converging lens (12), a pinhole member (13), and a converging lens (14) to impinge upon a CCD (15). An angle of incident light selected by the deflecting plate (11) is sequentially changed as time passes. Therefore, image information output by the CCD (15) becomes plural pieces of two-dimensional image information for which the photographing direction changes as time passes and which serve as image information required for displaying a three-dimensional image of the object in a space.

The parallel light passes through a condenser lens (12), a pinhole member (13), and a condenser lens (14) and falls on a CCD (15). The angle of incident light selected by the polarizer (11) can be changed with time. Therefore, the image information outputted from the CCD (15) is a set of items of two-dimensional image information including the direction of imaging changing with time and is necessary to display a three-dimensional image of an object in a space.
