Abstract: A network function and a method for associating a UE of a UE group to a PDU session with in a CN. The NF establishes a shared PDU session for the UE group before all of the UEs in the UE group register with the CN and binds a UE that has not yet registered with the CN to the shared PDU session when the UE registers with the CN, provided the UE will share at least one of a UL UP connection and a DL UP connection associated with the shared PDU session. The NF may be an SMF.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide a system and method used for allowing a path selection or reselection (hereby (re)selection). In some embodiments data packets for a session between a UE and an application system (AS) can utilize a pre-established user plane path between the AS and an access node (AN) which serves the UE. This can allow for faster session set-up times as a new user plane (UP) path need not be established for every new session if existing UP paths can be utilized. Some embodiments allow an application aware (re)selection of the user plane.

Abstract: Methods and system for supporting traffic steering through a service function chain, the service function chain comprising at least one data processing function. An aspect of the disclosure provides for a method for steering traffic of a packet data unit (PDU) performed by a session management function. The method includes receiving PCC rules from a policy control function, the PCC rules including information comprising at least one of service function chain information; final delivery indication; and selective traffic steering information and associated parameters. The method further includes configuring at least one user plane function (UPF) according to the information. In some embodiments the configuring the at least one UPF includes instructing a first UPF to detect traffic according to the packet detection rules and route the received packet according to the forwarding action rules.

Abstract: There is provided methods, systems and apparatuses for management of network functions. Abstract: Hierarchical Software Defined Network (SDN) architectures can be used to reduce complexity of traffic engineering in large or diverse network environments. In hierarchical SDN architectures, a network is sub-divided into multiple regions, and each region is assigned to a different SDN controller. Network status information is collected and consolidated at a regional level, and fed upstream through the SDN control plane until it reaches a root SDN controller. The root-SDN controller computes cost-based parameters, which are distributed to regional SDN controllers for local provisioning. The cost-based parameters can include Lagrangian variables estimations or other parameters that constrain regional traffic engineering optimization in a manner that advances global traffic engineering objectives.
