A retrofitting, inductive-battery-charging device for use with a surgical sterilization device, comprising an inductive charging assembly and an inductively powered battery-charging platform that is sterilizable inside a surgical sterilization device and is operable to charge at least one rechargeable battery of a battery-operated surgical instrument when the rechargeable battery is placed at the platform. The inductive charging assembly comprises an inductive-power-supply sub-assembly electrically connected to a power supply and is operable to supply power inductively over a distance at least equal to a width of a wall of the surgical sterilization device, and an inductive-power-receiver sub-assembly that is sterilizable inside the surgical sterilization device and electrically coupled to the platform. The inductive-power-receiver sub-assembly is operable to supply charging power to the platform for charging the at least one rechargeable battery when placed at the platform, and to inductively receive electrical power from the inductive-power-supply sub-assembly at least over the distance.

This invention relates to endoscopic electrocautery instruments for performing surgery on the tissue of a patient and passing current through the tissue to cause cauterization thereof. The instrument has a proximal end and a distal end and includes an elongated tube, a push rod located within the elongated tube, and a first and second end effector located adjacent a distal end of the elongated tube and controlled for relative movement by the push rod. Various arrangements are disclosed for creating a first and second cautery current path from the instrument proximal end to the first and second end effectors. In accordance with the invention, the end effectors are formed as scissor blade members having various conductive and non-conductive layer arrangements. The layer arrangements of the scissor blade members allow for different cauterization affects. Coupling arrangements between the blade members and the elongated tube are also disclosed.

A bipolar endoscopic scissors is provided with scissor blades where at least one scissor blade is coated with an electrically non-conductive ceramic from its cutting edge along at least a contiguous portion of its shearing surface. The coated blade is provided with a cutting edge having an obtuse included angle which is preferably between approximately 95.degree.-140.degree., and more preferably between 110.degree. and 120.degree.. The blades according to the invention may be configured in several different ways with regard to the number of layers and types of material used, the extent of the ceramic coating, and whether one or both blades are configured in an identical manner. The blades according to the invention having cutting edges defined by obtuse angles cut well and provide a good cutting feel to the practitioner while preventing the ceramic coating from chipping at the cutting edge.

A jaw assembly of an endoscopic biotome is formed by cutting a hemispherical end of a spring metal cylinder with electrical discharge or laser machining equipment to provide opposed jaw cups. Metal is cut from the middle portion of the cylinder to form two tapered arms which terminate at a cylindrical portion of the open end of the cylinder. At least one of the two tapered arms is bent away from the other to form the jaw assembly.
