摘要: A device includes a semiconductor light emitting device and a wavelength-converting material comprising Sr—SiON:Eu2+. The Sr—SiON:Eu2+ wavelength-converting material absorbs light emitted by the light emitting device and emits light of a longer wavelength. The Sr—SiON:Eu2+ wavelength-converting material may be combined with other wavelength-converting materials to make white light. In some embodiments, the Sr—SiON:Eu2+ wavelength-converting layer is combined with a red-emitting wavelength-converting layer and a blue light emitting device to generate emission in colors, which are not achievable by only mixing primary and secondary wavelengths. In some embodiments, the Sr—SiON:Eu2+ wavelength-converting layer is combined with a red-emitting wavelength-converting layer, a blue-emitting wavelength-converting layer, and a UV light emitting device.

摘要: The present invention provides an LED device comprising a phosphor-converting substrate that converts primary light emitted by the LED, which is blue light, into one or more other wavelengths of light, which then combine with unconverted primary light to produce white light. The substrate is a single crystal phosphor having desired luminescent properties. The single crystal phosphor has the necessary lattice structure to promote single crystalline growth of the light-emitting structure of the LED device. Moreover, the thermo-mechanical properties of the substrate are such that the introduction of excessive strain or cracks in the epitaxial films of the LED device is prevented. The characteristics of the substrate, i.e., the dopant concentration and thickness, are capable of being precisely controlled and tested before the LED device is fabricated so that the fraction of primary light that passes through the substrate without being converted is predictable and controllable. Likewise, the fraction of primary light that is converted by the substrate into one or more other wavelengths is predictable and controllable. By precisely controlling these fractions, phosphor-converted LED devices can be achieved that produce uniform, high-quality white light.

摘要: A broadband line source that is directional, rugged, compact, spatially and temporally uniform, stable, without the need for warmup, and relatively easy to implement. The source can be in single-color or multi-color, and it can be used, for example, in a scanner. In one embodiment, the line source includes a first thin-film electroluminescent stack with at least a bottom electrode, a top electrode, and a first active film between the two electrodes. The active film generates radiation in an area that has a width and a length, with the length being larger than the width. The length of the area sets the length of the line radiation, which is substantially homogenous along the line. In another embodiment, three of such stacks are encapsulated through thin-film processes by a cap, which sits on a substrate. The cap has one side surface that is more transmissive to radiation. The generated radiation is directed by the cap to be emitted at the more transmissive side surface to produce a single-color or a multi-color line source.

摘要: An edge emitter with a cap on top of a thin-film stack. The thin film stack includes a top transparent electrode, a bottom electrode, an active film between the two electrodes and an insulating film between the active film and the bottom electrode. Both the refractive indexes of the cap and the top transparent electrode are substantially matched to that of the active film to increase the amount of electroluminescent radiation propagating from the active film into the cap. The cap is thicker than the active film, and is made of a material with an attenuation to the electroluminescent radiation that is lower than that of the active film material. One side surface, the emitting side surface, of the cap is more transmissive to the electroluminescent radiation than the other side surfaces and the top surface of the cap. A significant portion of the electroluminescent radiation from the active film entering the cap is re-directed towards the emitting side surface to be radiated from the edge emitter. The emitting side surface can be tilted and the thickness of the insulating layer can be controlled to be within a predetermined range to increase the efficiency of the edge emitter.

摘要: An electroluminescent device used as an illuminating source in a scanner. The device includes at least one solid-state electroluminescent element, which has a transparent electrode with a top surface, a radiation generating stack under the transparent electrode, and a second electrode with a bottom surface under the radiation generating stack. Radiation is generated from the radiation generating stack when a selected voltage source is coupled across the electrodes. Most of the radiation generated is emitted either from the top surface or from (the top and the bottom surfaces). When the scanner scans a medium, the emitted radiation is substantially uniform at least across the top surface of the transparent electrode to create a uniform radiation source for illuminating the medium.
