Abstract:
A device to control a genset engine may use multiple feedback loops to provide a fast stable response to load changes. An outer feedback loop may receive frequency measurements and power measurements of a genset engine and determine a dispatch adjustment comprising a frequency setpoint based on the frequency measurements and power measurements. A middle feedback loop may comprise a double deadband droop filter that periodically generates a pulse based on the frequency setpoint and the power measurements. The middle feedback loop may update an inner loop setpoint based on the pulse. An inner feedback loop may alter a target fuel valve reference of the genset engine based on the inner loop setpoint generated by the second controller and a fuel valve droop.
Abstract:
Distributed controllers in an electric power delivery system obtain measurements and equipment status, calculate derived values, and determine Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) state, and share such with other distributed controllers and coordination controllers. Distributed controllers and coordination controllers further refine measurements, equipment status, derived values, and IED state. Control of the electric power delivery system is coordinated among the distributed controllers and the coordination controllers.

Electrical power machines are monitored according to the disclosure herein using time stamped mechanical conditions and electrical conditions. The mechanical conditions may include rotational position, calculated and time stamped rotational frequency, valve position, temperature, or vibration. The time stamped electrical conditions may include electrical power system frequency, electrical power machine field data, electrical power machine terminal information such as voltage and current, and the like. Electrical and mechanical time-stamped electrical power machine data from different machines that may be local or remote from each other may be compared for monitoring the machines.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to searching electric power system waveforms. Disclosed herein are various systems and methods for improving search performance through indexing electric power system waveforms using waveform attributes such as frequency, amplitude, angle, rate of change, and the like. According to some embodiments, multiple indexes may be used together to find information of interest. A reference signal may be utilized according to some embodiments. Normalizing a plurality of waveforms using a reference signal may facilitate the use of an index for comparing two arbitrary waveforms. This disclosure also relates to detecting and indexing islanding conditions in an electric power system. Various embodiments may utilize information relating to islanding conditions in connection with search operations.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are systems, devices, and methods for improving cybersecurity in electric power systems. In one embodiment, a local controller configured for use in an electric power system may include a measurement subsystem to receive a plurality of conditions related to electrical conditions in a microgrid. A communication subsystem may communicate a set of data related to conditions in the microgrid to a remote controller; and receive a plurality of requests for control actions from the remote controller. An analysis subsystem may generate an assessment of the plurality of requests for control actions in relation to the plurality of conditions related to electrical conditions in the microgrid and identify a subset of the plurality of requests for control actions from the remote controller for execution based on the assessment. A control action subsystem may then issue a control action to an asset in the microgrid.
Abstract:
A system includes a processor operatively coupled to memory. The processor performs operations that include obtaining electrical measurements of a power system. The processor determines a scaled energy value of a first set of the electrical measurements that are scaled with respect to a second set of electrical measurements. The processor determines that a potential ringdown event occurred by comparing the scaled energy value to a threshold energy value. The processor determines that the potential ringdown event is a confirmed ringdown event by comparing a scaled error value to a threshold error value. The processor generates one or more mode estimates from the confirmed ringdown event.

Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to systems and methods of detecting discharge events on power lines. For example, a system may include an acoustic sensor that detects a sound wave emitted from a power line. The system may include a radio frequency (RF) sensor that detects a radio wave emitted from the power line. The system may include electrical sensor circuitry that detects an electrical parameter of power being delivered on the power line. The system may include a processor that determines that a discharge event has occurred based on the sound wave, the radio wave, and the electrical characteristic. The system may provide an output signal indicating that the partial discharge event has occurred.

A frequency tracking system may use shaft speed and electrical frequency to estimate a frequency of a monitored machine. The frequency tracking system may convert shaft speed to a mechanical frequency and blend the electrical frequency and the mechanical frequency together to determine an estimated frequency. The frequency tracking system may blend the frequencies based on an operating state of the monitored machine and the frequency sensors.
