Storage systems configured for improved N-way connectivity among all of a plurality of storage controllers and all of a plurality of storage devices in the system. All controllers of the storage system are coupled through a switched fabric communication medium to all of the storage devices of the storage system. Thus, the back-end interface of each storage controller of the storage system is used for all communications with any of the storage devices as well as for any communications among the controllers to coordinate the N-way distribution of stored data in a declustered RAID storage environment. This use of the back-end channel for all storage controller to storage device N-way connectivity as well as controller to controller N-way connectivity eliminates the need for a dedicated inter-controller interface for such N-way connectivity and eliminates the over-utilization of a front-end (e.g., network) communication path for providing N-way connectivity in the storage system.

A method for back-off retry with priority routing in a single, cohesive SAS expander includes routing a data transfer between an input of a single, cohesive SAS expander and an output of the single, cohesive SAS expander, wherein the single, cohesive expander includes a first SAS expander, and at least one additional SAS expander via at least one inter-expander link (IEL). The routing of data may further include routing a first OPEN request on a direct path through the first SAS expander to a port of a device and routing a second OPEN request on an alternate path from the first SAS expander and through a second SAS expander to the port of the device. The method further includes determining link availability between the second SAS expander and the port of the device, and, upon determination of a failed link or a busy link, re-routing the data transfer from the second SAS expander to the first SAS expander or a third SAS expander, or retrying the data transfer through the second SAS expander.

Apparatus and methods for improved tree data structure management in a storage controller. A tree assist circuit coupled with a tree memory is provided for integration in a storage controller. I/O processors of the storage controller transmit requests to the tree assist circuit to create, modify, and access tree data structures stored in the tree memory. In one exemplary embodiment, the tree assist circuit is adapted to manage AVL trees. The tree data structures may be used by the I/O processors of the storage controller to manage region lock requests, cache-line lookup request, and other storage management functions of the controller. The I/O processors of the controller may comprise suitable programmed general-purpose processors and/or fast-path I/O request processor circuits.

Zone group permission tables of a SAS domain may have associated version identifiers, indicating a version of the zone group permission table. The version identifier may also be used for determining which of a plurality of zone group permission tables of the SAS domain is the current version if two or more SAS zoning expanders are storing different zone group permission tables.

Defibrillator assemblies and methods to wirelessly transfer energy from an external source to a battery or other rechargeable power source within the defibrillator assembly. The transfer of energy may be through a non-contact interface on a defibrillator cradle or a docking station that mounts the defibrillator. The rate of energy transfer may be equal to the energy drain caused by self-discharge and automated self-testing. Accordingly, since the rate of energy transfer is lower than that required to run the defibrillator system continuously, several wireless methods of energy transfer may be used. In addition, the defibrillator assembly may communicate diagnostic and non-diagnostic data to the external source.

Load factor information is generated within a storage system relating to operation of the storage system as a whole and relating to each of multiple storage controllers in the storage system. The information so generated in the storage system is communicated to a load balancing element associated with the multiple virtual machines. The load balancing element then utilizes the storage related load factor information, optionally in combination with other load factor information, to distribute or redistribute the operation of the multiple virtual machines over the plurality of physical processors.
