Abstract:
An optical scanning assembly for use in inspecting a channel is provided. The assembly includes a housing and an inspection probe that selectively advances from the housing along an axis. The probe includes a light source that directs light towards at least one side wall of the channel and a light detector that receives the light reflected from the side wall. The assembly further includes a controller in communication with the inspection probe. The controller obtains a first optical length measurement for the light reflected from the side wall when the inspection probe is in a first position along the axis within the channel, obtain a second optical length measurement for the light reflected from the side wall when the inspection probe is in a second position along the axis within the channel, and compare the first and second optical length measurements to determine variations in a geometry of the channel.
Abstract:
A system for nondestructive evaluation of railroad rails, includes a carriage including a plurality of wheels movably supporting the carriage on the rails, a source of vibration mounted on the carriage and connected to transmit vibrations of a preselected frequency to test regions on the rails through the wheels to cause an increase in temperature of the rails at locations of flaws in the test regions, an infrared detector for recording thermal images of the test regions to detect the increase in temperature of the location of the flaws, a controller connected to actuate the infrared detector to record the thermal images of the vibrations impacting the test regions, and store the thermal images recorded by the infrared detector.
Abstract:
Provided are methods and systems for non-destructive testing of parts while these parts are being fabricated and/or operated. A part has hybrid spectral sensors embedded within and bonded to one or more other components of the part. A hybrid spectral sensor may include two different structures. A first structure of the sensor provides a first spectral response when exposed to an excitation radiation. A second structure forms a Faraday cage around the first structure and blocks the excitation radiation to the first structure and/or blocks the first spectral response emitted by the first structure if the first structures gets exposed to the excitation radiation. The second structure may be bonded to one or more components of the part, such as a matrix resin, and may change its coverage of the first structure during fabrication and/or operation of the part thereby altering its blocking characteristics.
Abstract:
A system for detecting moisture characteristics of a material of a complex structure while the material is in situ or forms part of the complex structure. The system includes at least one moisture detection sensor positioned proximate the material of the complex structure while the material is in situ. The system also includes a controller in data receiving communication with the moisture detection sensor.
Abstract:
A method of bonding materials may comprise defining a bond interface between two materials in a cure zone on a surface of an object and heating the bond interface with sound waves. Heating the bond interface may include applying ultrasonic sound waves to the bond interface.
Abstract:
A camera system for producing super resolution images is disclosed. The camera system may include a target scene, a first detector configured to capture a first image of the target scene, and a second detector configured to capture a second image of the target scene. The first detector may include a first pitch, and the second detector may include a second pitch different from the first pitch.
Abstract:
A system for use in authenticating an object is provided. The system includes a radio-frequency identification tag coupled to the object and an interrogation system. The interrogation system includes a backscatter x-ray source configured to discharge backscatter x-ray beams towards the object. The backscatter x-ray source is calibrated such that the backscatter x-ray beams cause the radio-frequency identification tag to emit a signal. The system also includes a radio-frequency detector configured to receive the signal from the radio-frequency identification tag and a computing device in communication with the radio-frequency detector. The computing device is configured to obtain first identifying information of the object from the signal and authenticate the object from the first identifying information.
Abstract:
The present disclosure is generally directed to of method linear feature detection in a structure by providing a first digital image of the structure, creating a second corresponding digital image of the structure from the first digital image and determining a direction to shift pixels of the second corresponding digital image. A pixel shift value may be input to shift pixels of the second corresponding digital image, and pixels of the second corresponding digital image are shifted by the input pixel shift value in the determined direction. A third corresponding digital image of the structure may be calculated by subtracting the second corresponding digital image of the structure from the first digital image of the structure.
Abstract:
The different advantageous embodiments provide a method and apparatus. The apparatus comprises a moveable platform, a housing connected to the moveable platform, a power supply located inside of the housing, and an x-ray tube located inside of the housing. The power supply and the x-ray tube are immersed in a coolant. The x-ray tube is configured to generate an x-ray beam.
Abstract:
A machine and process for a heating system for a composite patch comprising a light beam and a controller. The controller is configured to command the light beam to heat the resin in the composite patch to a desired level for curing while avoiding overheating a fiber in the composite patch.
