Methods to pattern substrates with dense periodic nanostructures that combine top-down lithographic tools and self-assembling block copolymer materials are provided. According to various embodiments, the methods involve chemically patterning a substrate, depositing a block copolymer film on the chemically patterned imaging layer, and allowing the block copolymer to self-assemble in the presence of the chemically patterned substrate, thereby producing a pattern in the block copolymer film that is improved over the substrate pattern in terms feature size, shape, and uniformity, as well as regular spacing between arrays of features and between the features within each array compared to the substrate pattern. In certain embodiments, the density and total number of pattern features in the block copolymer film is also increased. High density and quality nanoimprint templates and other nanopatterned structures are also provided.

Methods and apparatus are provided for controlling writing and reading of data in an array of A storage fields of a probe-based data storage device in which data is written to and read from the array of storage fields by a corresponding array of probes. One method provides error-tolerance by exploiting the inherent parallelism of the probe storage array. A user data block to be written to the A-field array is first coded to produce a plurality of C-byte codewords, such that r.C=k1.A where r is the number of codewords and k1 is an integer≧1. A sub-blocks of k1 bytes are produced from the codewords by selecting successive bytes of each sub-block cyclically from the r codewords. The A sub-blocks are then written via respective probes to the corresponding storage fields of the storage field array.

A method for operating a Cartesian-type electron beam (e-beam) lithography (EBL) tool enables the efficient and precise writing of a closed curvilinear pattern, such as a circle, over a wide area of a workpiece. The curvilinear pattern overlies a plurality of contiguous fields of the EBL tool's x-y positioning stage, and the stage is moved along a path defined by the contiguous fields. Alignment marks associated with the first and next-to-last fields are formed on the specimen. The alignment marks are used to adjust the shape of the last field so that when the e-beam is scanned in the last field there is a substantially continuous connection of the pattern between the next-to-last field and the first field. The invention is particularly applicable to making a master disk with concentric circular tracks for nanoimprinting patterned magnetic recording disks.

The common frame and the storage medium are designed for moving relative to each other for creating or detecting marks. Each probe is assigned a given field within the storage medium for creating or detecting marks in various tracks. A track density is representative of the distance between consecutive tracks. A linear density is representative of a minimum distance between consecutive marks within one track. The data storage device is designed for grouping the probes into various probe classes, each probe class being characterized in that all its assigned probes are controlled with a common track density and in that all its assigned probes are operated in respect of track movement simultaneously. Each probe class is controlled with a different combination of track density and linear density.
