The induction heater includes an inverter circuit, an output detection section for detecting the magnitude of the inverter circuit, a first movement detection section, and a storage section for storing a control value before the first movement detection section detects a movement of the object. In a reach control mode, the output of the inverter circuit is gradually increased to a target. In a stable control mode, the output of the inverter circuit is maintained at the target. When the first movement detection section detects a movement of the object, a control section shifts to a first output mode in which a control value derived from the stored control value is output.

The friction torque elements are synchronously engaged and released during a torque phase of an upshift event as torque from a torque source is increased while allowing the off-going friction elements to slip, followed by an inertia phase during which torque from a torque source is modulated. A perceptible transmission output torque reduction during an upshift is avoided. Measured torque values are used during a torque phase of the upshift to correct an estimated oncoming friction element target torque so that transient torque disturbances at an oncoming clutch are avoided and torque transients at the output shaft are reduced.

In one example, the method adjusts a desired engine speed to at least two levels during engine speed run-up from cranking to engine idle speed.
