A downshift control determines whether a commanded downshift is a downshift oriented toward minimum shock or a downshift oriented toward responsiveness, based on inputs from various sensors. The oil pressure on the hydraulic servo which controls the releasing-side friction engagement element is controlled based on the determined downshift type (DT), so that the releasing-side friction engagement element is released in accordance with a selected one of a plurality of release patterns, i.e., release patterns corresponding to different downshift type indexes (Dt). The releasing speed of the releasing-side friction engagement element is changed in accordance with the downshift type. By properly determining the type of downshift, it becomes possible to realize a shift of a type in accordance with the driver's intention.

An improved transmission upshift control in which the off-going clutch is controlled to emulate the behavior of an ideal free-wheel device to thereby achieve nearly ideal timing of the off-going clutch disengagement relative to the on-coming clutch engagement. During the preparation phase of the shift, the off-going pressure is reduced in proportion to the estimated volume of fluid supplied to the on-coming clutch such that the off-going pressure is at a calibrated value when the on-coming clutch is filled. However, the calibrated value is adjusted upward in direct relation to the transmission input torque above a given level so as to emulate the reaction torque that would be exerted by an ideal free-wheel device for maintaining the current speed ratio. The torque phase of the control commences when the estimated volume indicates that the on-coming clutch is completely filled. At such point, the off-going clutch pressure decreases from the calibrated value at a rate determined as a function of the scheduled on-coming clutch torque to emulate the rate of decay that would occur with an ideal free-wheel device as the on-coming clutch engages. If the confidence level is low, the off-going clutch control parameters are biased to extend the engagement of the off-going clutch. If the extended engagement of the off-going clutch results in a tie-up condition due to engagement of the on-coming clutch, the off-going pressure is quickly released.

An infinite Speed ratio continuously variable transmission comprises a power recirculation mode clutch (9) and direct mode clutch (10). At least one of the power recirculation mode clutch (9) and direct mode clutch (10) comprises an electromagnetic two-way clutch. The electromagnetic two-way clutch maintains the engaged state during excitation and can transmit drive force from both the drive side and non-drive side. On the other hand, when there is a change-over from the energized state to the non-energized state, a one-way clutch state is obtained wherein drive force is permitted only in the transmission direction of drive force in the instant of the change-over to non-excitation. When a drive force is input in the reverse direction to the drive force transmitted in the one-way clutch state, the one-way clutch state is disengaged, and the disengaged state of the clutch is maintained until subsequent re-excitation. Therefore, change-over of the clutch at the rotation synchronous point RSP where the power recirculation mode and direct mode are changed over, can be performed rapidly.
