摘要: Apparatus and methods for providing phase controlled evanescent illumination. The phase controlled evanescent illumination is useful for Imaging, metrology, and energy delivery. The light waves comprising the evanescent electromagnetic field are inhomogeneous in that their planes of equal phase are substantially perpendicular to the direction of propagation and to their planes of constant amplitude. The planes of equal phase are therefore normal to the surface to which the evanescent field is adjacent and to a sample surface illuminated by this field as well. Methods and means for dynamic or static phase shifting of inhomogeneous waves comprising the evanescent field are disclosed.

摘要: There is described a novel thermographic recording film, and more specifically, a novel image-forming system incorporated therein comprising at least one layer and including and a Lewis acid material, a di- or triarylmethane thiolactone dye precursor, an acidic organic material, a binder and a thermal stabilizer. Thermographic recording films comprising the novel image-forming system of the present invention exhibit excellent thermal stability, and desirable minimum optical densities, indicative of substantially less premature image development at elevated environmental temperatures. Embodiments of the invention wherein the thermographic recording films further include a light insensitive organic silver salt, a reducing agent, a binder and, preferably, a toning agent, show substantially enhanced image density.

摘要: A laminating roll for laminating a layer of protective coating to an image-bearing layer, has a generally cylindrical metallic core and a generally cylindrical compliant and resilient covering surrounding the core. The core and covering both having positive crowns such that the diameter of the outer surfaces of the core and covering measured at central portions thereof are respectively greater than the diameters measured at end portions thereof. The differences between the diameters of the core at central and end portions of the core is greater than that of the covering. The thickness of the covering increases from the center to the ends of the roll.

摘要: A high-efficiency holographic diffuser is provided, the holographic diffuser being comparatively thin, yet characterized by good optical density along a broad bandwidth. In particular, the high-efficiency holographic diffuser comprises a light-transmissive substrate; and a planar hologram layer, the planar hologram layer having an interference pattern holographically recorded therein, the interference pattern producing a diffuse light pattern in reflection when irradiated with light, the interference pattern being resultant of the combination of an incident wavefront and a counterpropagating wavefront substantially coherent with the incident wavefront, the incident coherent wavefront having impinged upon the planar hologram layer from a first side, the counterpropagating coherent wavefront having impinged upon the planar hologram layer from a second side opposite the first side, the incident coherent wavefront being a diffused coherent wavefront, the counterpropagating coherent wavefront also being a diffused coherent wavefront. The high-efficiency holographic diffuser can be formed by diffusing a coherent wavefront prior to its incidence on a holographic recording medium, transmitting the diffused wavefront through the holographic recording medium, then reflecting the transmitted diffused wavefront with a highly reflective optical element back through the holographic recording medium.

摘要: A dark-field imaging system and method is disclosed that employs photon tunneling to visualize and measure submicron features of reflecting or transmissive materials within the subnanometer-to-several-micron range. The system comprises an illumination section for providing an evanescent field, where the evenescent field is selectively scattered by the surface of the reflecting or transmissive material, and a collection section for transmitting the radiant energy produced by the evanescent field scattering to an imaging section, which may be a vidicon, digital camera, or other photo detector device. Various embodiments are disclosed including the use of a bulk optic prismatic element, the forward aplantic element of a compound microscope objective, diffracting gratings, and optical waveguides. In each embodiment the collection section and illumination section may be completely optically, and thus physically, uncoupled.

摘要: A thermally-activatable overcoat-releasing laminate useful for the application of a protective overcoat onto a planar surface, such as a binary image surface on a peel-developed laminar imaging medium, is provided. The overcoat-releasing laminate comprises a durable layer and an adhesive layer firmly interconnected at an interface, the firm interconnection being resultant of polymerization of a photopolymerizable monomer by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. As effected by the firm interconnection, use of the overcoat-releasing laminate is characterized by reliable release of the protective overcoat from a carrier web.

摘要: A camera shutter and focus encoder assembly comprises an encoder mask fixed in a camera housing and having an arcuate window having alternating opaque and transmissive portions, and an encoder sheet mounted in the housing in abutting relationship with the encoder mask, the encoder sheet being movable with exposure blades and the focus lens of the camera and having an arcuate window having alternating opaque and transmissive portions therein. Means are provided for pressing the encoder mask and the encoder sheet together with the mask and sheet windows in registration with each other. A sensor passes pulses of light through the mask and sheet windows when the transmissive portions thereof are in registration and detects the pulses of light, converts the light pulses to electrical signals, and transmits the electrical signals. A controller receives the electrical signals and determines therefrom the position and direction of movement of the shutter blades, compares the blade position and movement direction with a preselected program and sends to a motor a signal instructing any required compensating shutter blade movement change, and in like manner monitors the focus assembly and sends to the motor a signal instructing any required compensating lens movement change.
