摘要: Safety-blade dispensers for safely storing surgical blades prior to surgery and optionally for retrieving used surgical blades after surgery. In either case, the safety-blade dispenser is configured to store one or more surgical blades in an orientation that allows a user to simply and safely attach a surgical tool handle to the surgical blades (and optionally remove the handle from the surgical blades) without requiring the user to physically touch or manipulate the surgical blades by hand. The safety-blade dispensers disclosed herein may be used alone or in conjunction with a system and method of preventing wrong-site surgery.

摘要: A container holds at least one surgical implement, has a lock mechanism, and has a signature label that impedes access to the surgical implement until the correct surgical site is confirmed. A method of using the container includes the steps of confirming the correct surgical site, signing the label and removing it from the container, placing the label in the medical record, unlocking the container, removing the implement, and beginning the surgery, wherein the surgical team is forced to pause to confirm the correct surgical site before starting the surgery. The system and method may also include a wrong site surgery profile used by individuals within the surgical procedure environment and third parties for tracking and determining if, and where, a wrong site surgical procedure occurred. The profile can be updated, tacked and monitored while a patient is interacting within the medical environment.

摘要: A device for the application and storage of a sharps device is disclosed here in with the ability to re-sterilize and reuse this device on multiple occasions. This device enables the user to access and store the blade in a safe manner where the chances of accidental puncture are greatly reduced. The device enables the user to store the sharps blade in the device in such a manner that will allow the user to autoclave or sterilize the storage device and the blade at the same time. The device is designed for multiple uses over a wide range of different blades, such as the myriad of surgical blades and blades used in the hobby and crafts arena using X-Acto knife style of blades. When a singular device is used for the storage, application and re-loading of sharps, the user is more familiar with the operation of the device, which leads to more comfort of the user in dealing with sharps blades. Also since the operating room has minimal space to store the necessary tools and devices, when a single device can have multiple uses it is advantageous and space saving.

摘要: A surgical blade includes a handle with a recess sized to receive the proximal end of a blade assembly. The recess includes a notch as well as opposed facing distal ridges designed to engage elevated surfaces in the blade assembly to maintain the blade assembly and handle assembled. The blade assembly includes a blade portion and a fitting having a protrusion sized to be received in the proximal notch of the recess in the handle when the blade portion is assembled to the handle. The fitting also includes side faces having opposed elevated surfaces obliquely disposed so that they are engaged by the distal ridges within the handle recess. The fitting also includes an upwardly extending catch that engages a distal surface on the handle to assist in locking the blade assembly to the handle. The recess of the handle includes inner tapered surfaces. The side faces of the fitting are tapered to the same degree so that as the fitting is pushed upwardly within the recess, the side faces of the fitting engage the lateral inner surfaces of the recess to provide an interference fit therebetween. A blade removal system permits the blade assembly to be removed from the handle without any danger of cutting or puncturing the fingers or hands of the surgeon. The system includes a container having a removable lid, with the lid having an opening leading to a short passageway receiving the blade assembly. The blade assembly may be inserted into the recess until the fitting engages within a rectangular opening therein. In that orientation, the handle may be pivoted to unlock the blade assembly from the handle.

摘要: A single-use scalpel blade remover (1) removes a blade (33) from a tang (32) of a scalpel (30) and captures it, in a single-handed operation. The remover (1) comprises a housing (2) having a detent (16), and an actuator (3) which is operatively juxtaposed with the housing (2) and moveable alongside the housing in a forward direction from a proximal position (whereat an opening is formed between the proximal ends of the actuator and the housing) to a distal position (whereat the detent (16) engages the proximal end of the actuator). The blade remover (1) also includes a cam-operated mechanism (14,23,20) for automatically separating the heel of the blade (33) from the tang (32) as the actuator (3) is moved to the distal position. In use, the blade (33) on the tang (32) is inserted in the opening and the actuator is pushed forward by the tang to its distal position, whereupon the detent (16) engages the proximal end of the actuator (3) and retains it in its distal position and prevents rearward movement of the blade (33). As the heel has been separated from the tang (32), upon withdrawal of the tang from the scalpel blade remover (1), the blade (33) is stripped from the tang and retained captively between the actuator (3) and the housing (2).
