Abstract: Disclosed herein are various systems and methods for facilitating control of a tool or tools. The systems can allow a user to control multiple degrees of freedom. One such system allows a user to control multiple degrees of freedom of two tools simultaneously. Another such system allows a user to control multiple degrees of freedom with a single hand. Frames and rails for supporting and/or constraining movement of a tool or tools are also described herein.

Abstract: Systems and methods for using a sterile drape with a surgical table are described. The system includes a sterile drape and at least one securement device that secure the sterile drape to the surgical table. The securement device may be an adhesive sticker having a perforation. Because of the perforation, the sticker is prone to break under small levels of force exerted on the sticker. In this way, a user can visually determine whether potential breaches of sterility have occurred when the sticker has broken. Additionally, the system may include magnets, weights, poly-ties, rubber bands, hooks, clips, buckles, adhesive tabs, straps, tape, and the like to secure the sterile drape to the surgical table. In this way, the surgical table can be prepared, the sterile drape can be installed, and the drape can be secured to the table to prevent breaches of sterility.

Abstract: A distraction device for subcutaneous attachment to vertebrae for correcting curvature of a spine is provided. The distraction device includes a housing that includes a generally hollow interior, a drive system including a drive rod operatively supported in the hollow interior of the housing and a drive element coupled to the drive rod. The drive rod is rotatable within the housing about an axis of rotation and includes a first member a second member. The distraction device includes a first extension arm operatively coupled to the first end of the housing and a second extension arm operatively coupled to the second end of the housing. Rotation of the drive rod, induced by the drive element, causes the first extension arm to move into or out from the opening at the first end of the housing in a first movement direction and the second extension arm to move into or out from the opening at the second end of the housing in a second movement direction to vary a length of the distraction device.

Abstract: A surgical instrument, has an end effector that includes an ultrasonic blade, and a clamp arm that moves relative to the ultrasonic blade from an opened position toward an intermediate position and a closed position. The clamp arm is offset from the ultrasonic blade to define a predetermined gap in the intermediate position between the opened position and the closed position. A clamp arm actuator connects to the clamp arm and moves from an opened configuration to a closed configuration to direct the clamp arm from the opened position toward the intermediate position and the closed position. A spacer connects with the clamp arm to inhibit movement of the clamp arm from the intermediate position toward the closed position for maintaining the predetermined gap between the clamp arm and the ultrasonic blade.

Abstract: A system and method for locating magnetic material. In one embodiment the system includes a magnetic probe; a power module in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to supply current to the magnetic probe; a sense module in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to receive signals from the magnetic probe; and a computer in electrical communication with the power module and the sense module. The computer generates a waveform that controls the supply of current from the power module and receives a signal from the sense module that indicates the presence of magnetic material. The magnetic probe is constructed from a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion of substantially 10−6/° C. or less and a Young's modulus of substantially 50 GPa or greater. In one embodiment magnetic nanoparticles are injected into a breast and the lymph nodes collecting the particles are detected with the probe and deemed sentinel nodes.

Abstract: A surgical visualization system is disclosed. The surgical visualization system is configured to identify one or more structure(s) and/or determine one or more distances with respect to obscuring tissue and/or the identified structure(s). The surgical visualization system can facilitate avoidance of the identified structure(s) by a surgical device. The surgical visualization system can comprise a first emitter configured to emit a plurality of tissue-penetrating light waves and a second emitter configured to emit structured light onto the surface of tissue. The surgical visualization system can also include an image sensor configured to detect reflected visible light, tissue-penetrating light, and/or structured light. The surgical visualization system can convey information to one or more clinicians regarding the position of one or more hidden identified structures and/or provide one or more proximity indicators. In various instances, a robotic camera of the surgical visualization system can monitor and track one or more tagged structures.

Abstract: Compression anastomosis devices having a plurality of distinct pressure profile zones on the surface of the device. The anastomosis devices may be comprised of a plurality of magnetic connecting members arranged in an annular geometry, e.g., a polygon or circle. The anastomosis device may also be a continuous, non-segmented magnet, or other compression anastomosis device. The compression anastomosis device is deployed into a body lumen, e.g., endoscopically and/or laparoscopically, at a target site. A second compression anastomosis device is placed at an adjacent target site in an adjacent lumen. The compression anastomosis devices are brought together and mate, e.g., magnetically, creating an anastomosis.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are devices, systems, and methods thereof for minimizing or preventing contamination of sterile medical devices during magnetization thereof. For example, a magnetizer cover is disclosed for maintaining sterility of a medical device while magnetizing the medical device. The magnetizer cover includes a base, a funnel extending from the base, and a grip tab extending from the base. The base includes a medical-device interface and a magnetizer interface opposite the medical-device interface. The funnel includes a funnel stem configured to protect an elongate medical device from contacting a magnetizer when the medical device is inserted into the funnel. The grip tab is configured for manipulating the magnetizer cover.

Abstract: An electrosurgical device with an electrode having a first portion whose exterior is electrically uninsulated, a second portion whose exterior is electrically insulated, and a third portion. The device includes an elongated hollow body formed by a first member and a second member. The second member is capable of rotating relative to the first member. The hollow body has an internal cavity, a front end, a rear end, an external surface, and an electrical wire arranged within the body. The hollow body is configured to reversibly receive the third portion of the electrode at the front end of the body such that electrical contact is made between the electrode and the electrical wire and the second portion of the electrode is not surrounded by the hollow body. A first button is provided for controlling a current flow at a first level to the electrode and is arranged on the external surface. A vacuum tube is slidably engaged by the body and has an inlet generally facing the front end and adjacent the electrode. A vacuum outlet port is arranged near the rear end of the body, and the outlet port, internal cavity, and vacuum inlet are in fluid communication with each other.
