    Abstract: A filtration device comprising a media basket, a baseplate, and a canister. The media basket is affixed to the baseplate. The canister has a cavity therein and is detachably coupled with the baseplate to enclose the media basket. The media basket contains a porous filtration material that efficiently removes contaminants from liquid. The device is configured to establish a first siphon to convey liquid from outside the device into the canister cavity through a canister pipe when a liquid level outside the filtration device is higher than the top of the weir in the canister pipe and configured to establish a second siphon to convey liquid from canister cavity through the top of a center riser pipe and out an outlet pipe when the first siphon has been established and the liquid level outside the filtration device is higher than the top of the center riser pipe.

    Abstract: A stormwater filter assembly includes a hood and an outlet tube within the hood for draining filtered stormwater. The outlet tube has a solid wall along at least a portion of its height, and an inlet above the solid wall. A second tube is disposed about the outlet tube defining a flow space therebetween for receiving filtered stormwater. The second tube includes a wall that is perforated along at least a portion of its height that overlaps with the solid wall of the outlet tube such that filtered stormwater that enters the flow space must move upward to enter the outlet tube. A filter media is disposed between the hood and the second tube through which stormwater travels during a filtering operation.

    Abstract: A filter assembly that filters water, particularly stormwater, that includes flow regulating, siphon inducing, and surface cleaning features that allow the filter assembly to operate at the design filtration rate for an extended period of time. During filtration, water flows inward through an annular filter medium into a drain manifold. The rate of flow into the drain manifold is controlled by a float valve assembly. A check valve permits air to escape, but not enter, the filter assembly creating a siphon effect when the rate of flow into the drain manifold is increased. The siphon effect draws water through the entire filtration surface and the entire volume of the filter medium. When the external water level decreases to the level of an array of voids in the filter assembly enclosure, the siphon is interrupted by turbulent air streams entering the filter assembly, agitating the filter surface and dislodging particulate matter.

    Abstract: Improved open gravity backwash filters have a filter chamber containing a particulate filter bed with drainage space beneath the bed and an effluent channel into which filtered effluent from the drainage space flows at a limited rate during the filter mode of operation. The effluent channel has an outflow weir at a height above the top of the filter bed. There is an influent channel in which the influent liquid level is above the top of the filter bed, a gullet with a floor below the top of the filter bed to receive influent from the influent channel and a waste effluent channel with a floor below the level of the top of the filter bed. During the filtering mode, influent is siphoned from the influent channel into the gullet from where it flows to and through the filter bed. During the backwash mode, filtered effluent is siphoned from the effluent channel into the drainage space to pass upwardly through the filter bed to the gullet and the resulting waste effluent in the gullet is siphoned from the gullet into the waste effluent channel.

    Abstract: A countercurrent liquid-solid contacting apparatus comprises a liquid purifying column for substantially purifying a liquid by passing the liquid upwardly through a bed of purifying material and a regenerating column for regenerating the purifying material used to purify the liquid. The liquid purifying column includes supply and transfer ports defined respectively at the top and bottom thereof and has therein the bed of purifying material which is spaced a predetermined distance from the top of the liquid treating column to provide a vacant space. The purifying column further includes a liquid inlet and outlet with a portion of the purifying bed above the liquid outlet serving as a settling layer to avoid any possible fluidization and/or expansion of the purifying material. The regenerating column is similar in construction to the construction of the purifying column, however, compressed air and washing liquid are successively or simultaneously supplied into the regenerating colunn to fluidize the soiled purifying material to separate suspended solids from the soiled purifying particles. The regenerated purifying material is continuously or intermittently supplied into the purifying column. A method therefor is also disclosed.

    Abstract: An improved self-backwashing filter of the type having a lower filter chamber and an upper backwash storage chamber. In one embodiment, the service outlet pipe means comprise an inverted Ushaped siphon pipe, the top of which is at least as high as the upper level of the filter means. Air vent means communicate with the siphon, and liquid level sensing means are positioned in the filter chamber above the filter means. The liquid level sensing means are operatively connected to the air vent means to open the air vent means, breaking the siphon when the liquid level falls past the liquid level sensing means. In another embodiment, a head box is provided, and the liquid inlet means comprise an inlet pipe, a head box, and a downtake pipe. Liquid from the inlet pipe flows over the first weir to the downtake pipe. If the downtake pipe does not accept all of this liquid, the overflow flows over the second weir, and is diverted to another filter or to the drain.
