Abstract:
An article forming system for forming at least one sheet of material into an article, such as a decorative flower pot cover for example, and a novel article formed utilizing such a system. The article forming system includes a male die, a female die and a platform having a support surface and an opening extending through the support surface. The female die is disposed generally within the opening in the platform with the upper end of the female die being disposed near the support surface. The article forming system includes means for slidingly holding portions of the sheet of material generally against portions of the support surface while permitting such held portions to slide on the support surface during the forming of the article for cooperating in forming a decorative border on the decorative flower pot cover type of article which flares generally away from the flower pot object when the decorative flower pot cover article is applied to the flower pot. The article formed in accordance with the present invention includes overlapping folds formed by overlapping portions of the sheet of material to bring portions of the sheet of material into bondable contact, the overlapping folds providing the mechanical strength necessary for the formed sheet of material to hold a predetermined shape thereby permitting the utilization of thinner sheets of material to form articles.

Abstract:
An apparatus with pivoting blades and closable surfaces for forming a sheet of material into a flower pot or flower pot cover having fins. In an embodiment for forming outwardly extending fins, the apparatus includes a male mold and a plurality of plates arranged in pairs to define a forming opening. The male mold has a plurality of fingers which are laterally extendable from the outer periphery of the male mold. A pneumatic or hydraulic piston and cylinder is provided to move the male mold between a storage position spaced from the forming opening and a forming position within the forming opening. Each pair of plates is movable between an open position and a closed position. In operation, the fingers are extended to push folded portions of a sheet of material between the pairs of plates, which are closed to press the folded portions into fins. In an alternate embodiment for forming outwardly extending fins, pairs of movable plates are positioned between stationary segments. The plates move away from one another to press folded portions of a sheet of material against the adjoining stationary segments to form fins. In another embodiment, a female mold having closable female segments cooperates with blades which are pivotable between the female segments to produce outwardly extending fins. In an apparatus for forming inwardly extending fins, blades are pivoted to push folded portions of a sheet of material between segments of a male mold.
Abstract:
A device and method for forming a pocketed card stock or paper member having a wide peripheral edge. A template (12) is provided having a forming edge with a shape corresponding to the wide peripheral edge of the member. A flexible sheet of card stock or paper (14) is also provided. An urging device (62) is provided for urging the flexible sheet of card stock or paper (14) adjacent to the template (12) such that an extended portion (54) thereof extends beyond the forming edge of the template (12) and a remaining portion thereof does not extend beyond the forming edge of the template (12). A folding device (26) is provided for urging the extended portion (54) around the forming edge and a securing device (24) is provided for securing the extended portion (54) to the remaining portion of the flexible sheet of card stock or paper (14) after the extended portion (54) has been urged around the forming edge to form a wide edge. The flexible sheet of card stock or paper (14) is held into contact with the template (12) with vacuum pressure. The folding device comprises a roller (26) or a spring loaded bar (86) to force the wide edge of the flexible sheet (14) around the template (12) to form two creases in the flexible sheet (14).
Abstract:
A corrugated board package formed from a blank of a kind having a single component to define a base, sides and top. The blank has a substantially square or rectangular base portion limited by fold lines and/or cuts or cutouts and four separate peripheral portions. The peripheral portions include an opposed pair of the peripheral portions being foldable to create first opposed side walls and subsequent to assembly being further folded to provide at least part of the top of the package, those portions of the peripheral portion to form the opposed side walls being extended at one end in a direction parallel to the fold line and/or cut or cutout connection to the base portion to define a flap which, either in a folded or unfolded condition, can be folded at right angles from the side wall to assume a position as part of the structure of an end wall normal to each opposed side wall with a projection or projections formed by part of the flap, whether a fold created periphery or otherwise, directed upwardly. The peripheral portions also include a second opposed pair of peripheral portions each being foldable to create part of the structure of the end wall normal to the first mentioned opposed side walls. The construction and arrangement of the package is such that in the assembled package the parallel flutes of the corrugated board run across the blank so as to be vertically extending in each side wall and in at least that part of each flap having the projection and further being such that there are openings formed in the base portion to allow the same to nest reproducibly on the projections of a like package, whether closed or not, to provide a nesting capability. The invention also consists of a blank for the package, the method of forming the package and apparatus for forming the package by the method using a sequence of forming zones.
Abstract:
A cover for use with a flower pot having a floral grouping disposed therein. The cover includes a sheet of material having a sheet extension connected to an outer peripheral surface thereof. The sheet of material is formed into a pot cover for covering the flower pot and the sheet extension extends over the floral grouping.
Abstract:
A case, made from a sheet material such as cardboard or corrugated board, having rectangular lateral faces connected in twos by a fold line. The fold lines are parallel to each other. Such a case comprises at least five lateral faces. It may be obtained by wrapping a sheet material blank about a mandrel in cooperation with a pressure plate whose profile corresponds to that of two or three consecutive faces of the mandrel.
Abstract:
This invention relates to the field of paperboard tray forming machines which typically consist of an upper and lower die which interlock to deform a paperboard blank. The invention is an arcuate yoke having a pair of legs to which locating stops and side guide plates are rigidly attached. The die is angled to the earth so that a blank deposited onto the die is gravity biased toward the locating stops. The yoke is vibratingly driven and the blank is vibrated into position on the lower die by contacting the locating stops and side guide plates and vibrating to the blank's lowest position on the die.
