A system and method for determining a route of travel and associated mileage of a vehicle is disclosed. The system records a vehicle's identification number, location, and odometer mileage transmitted via satellite to a fixed station. The location data is provided to a processor which determines an estimated route of travel by said vehicle using a routing program. The estimated route is comprised of a plurality of position segments, each position segment having a corresponding mileage and average expected speed. The route of travel may be checked for accuracy by comparing the estimated route mileage to the odometer mileage. If a significant difference is found, a diagnostic procedure is performed which attempts to correct the mismatch by evaluating alternate routes of travel. If the alternative route mileage agrees with the actual odometer miles within a predetermined threshold, the new route and associated mileage is used as the "true" route taken by the vehicle. The diagnostic procedure can also identify position segments where the vehicle appeared to be traveling much slower or faster than the average speed for that position segment. The mileage difference can then be allocated proportionally to each identified suspect position segment to provide an accurate estimate of the miles driven within the predetermined jurisdiction. Once the route of travel has been verified, the mileage traveled by the vehicle can be accurately determined and used for various computations. For example, state fuel-taxes may be accurately calculated from the mileage information.

A system for storing beginning and ending odometer readings of a plurality of individual trips made by a vehicle. The odometer readings for each trip are stored individually for future retrieval and use. The system can be directly connected to an odometer device included on the vehicle, or odometer information can be manually input by the vehicle operator. The date and other data such as the vehicle and operator identify, trip purpose, and customer identification codes, are stored for each trip. A data I/O port is provided to allow direct transfer of data from the system to a central computer where the data can be used by appropriate computer programs. The distance traveled during each trip can be calculated by a central computer, or the system can be programmed to calculate the trip distance. The apparatus is accommodated in a compact housing which slides into a cradle mounted inside the vehicle for convenient relocation from one vehicle to another or to a computer for data transfer. The apparatus is powered by the vehicle power source. The present invention provides an accurate and convenient system for logging the information associated with each trip made by a vehicle so that accurate records can be easily kept on the use of a vehicle.

An embodiment of the invention as a hubodometer for measuring rotations of a wheel uses of a housing (1), printed circuit board (3) with all electronic circuitry for counting data, data storage, and two way data communication, and an anti-rotation device. A low power radio frequency transmitter and receiver are used to receive commands and to transfer stored data to a receiving unit which may be a portable battery-powered unit or a fixed-mount unit. Such data transfer by RF link eliminates the inherent problems associated with visual readout or optical data transfer from units located where dirt grime buildup is common.

A hubodometer (10) for attachment to a vehicle's wheel structure for sensing a rotation of the wheel structure and for converting the sensed rotation to a distance travelled. The hubodometer comprises an outer housing (12) having a permanent magnet (28) affixed thereto for generating a magnetic field and a coupler (14) for coupling the housing to the wheel structure such that the outer housing rotates therewith. The hubodometer further comprises an anti-rotation mechanism (16) rotatably coupled within the outer housing, the mechanism having a plurality of components (18,20,22,24,30) coupled thereto, the components being stabilized against rotation thereby. The components include an electronic controller (20) and a plurality of magnetic field sensors (30). The plurality of sensors are disposed relative to the housing such that as the magnet rotates thereabout all of the plurality of magnetic field sensors do not simultaneously sense the magnetic field. In one embodiment the hubodometer is programmed via the plurality of sensors with calibration related data after the hubodometer is sealed. In another embodiment the display is powered by an output of an illumination-to-current conversion device (40 ), the device output also being coupled to the electronic controller such that illumination modulated in accordance with information is read and interpreted by the controller.
