Magnetic circuitry may be designed so that the total bias flux is independent or substantially independent of a position of the target with respect to the poles or the control flux. The electromagnetic actuator also includes flux sensors introduced into each gap between the poles and the target. The electromagnetic actuator further includes an actuator control circuit to command the current in the control coil to bring a difference between the readings of the two flux sensors to a targeted level. In some aspects, the force exerted on the actuator target in this arrangement may be proportional to the command signal regardless of the position of the actuator target, MMF drop in the soft-magnetic parts of the magnetic circuit, or the frequency.

A fault detector for detecting valve movement of a valve in a fuel injector of an engine system, the valve comprising an electromagnetic actuator arranged to move the valve between first and second valve positions during a valve cycle, the engine system comprising a sensor for sensing a current through the actuator. The detector comprises a controller arranged to control the sensor; inputs for receiving from the sensor data related to the current through the actuator; a processor arranged to analyze the received data for current discontinuities; and outputs for outputting a valve movement signal in dependence upon the current discontinuities determined by the processor. The controller is arranged to enable the sensing means during a finite sampling window and to: (i) move the sampling window from a first window position for a first injection event to a progressively later window position for one or more subsequent injection events; (ii) to determine a new sampling window position on the basis of a valve movement signal output for at least two of the preceding window positions; and (iii) to feedback the new sampling window position for a subsequent injection event.

This invention provides two methods for detecting mechanical or electrical faults in a solenoid valve. In the first method, a force sensor is placed in the valve in such a way as to detect changes in the impact force of the plunger against the solenoid valve body or coil housing (depending upon the direction of movement of the plunger upon application of the electric current/magnetic field). A second method is provided which makes use of an accelerometer placed in such a way as to detect changes in the response of the plunger to the application of the magnetic field.

A method for characterizing a fluid control solenoid with current compensation is described. A current command is sent to the fluid control solenoid. The current command indicates a desired current value related to a desired fluid output pressure to be applied to the solenoid. An actual fluid output pressure is measured at a valve associated with the fluid control solenoid for the desired current value applied to the solenoid. An actual current received value at the fluid control solenoid is also measured. Post processing is then applied. A compensated current value related to the actual fluid output pressure is determined based on a difference between the current command and the actual current received value. Methods for dynamic current compensation are also described.

In the dither current power supply control method, in order to prevent occurrence of a difference between the target average current and the detected average current, which is caused when a medium current (I0) between a dither large current (I2) and a dither small current (I1) and a waveform average (Ia) of the dither current are different from each other depending on a response time difference (a−b) between a rise time (b) and a fall time (a) of the dither current, negative feedback control is carried out by using a command medium current corresponding to the target average current corrected by a correction parameter based on experimentally measured data, thereby suppressing occurrence of a transient fluctuation error by the negative feedback control, so that a highly precise and stable load current is acquired.
