    摘要: A low inductance resistor for high current limitation is arranged from a single conductor wrapped in a continuous direction to form a plurality of turns wherein current transport through each of the turns induces a corresponding magnetic field to oppose the magnetic field induced within each next adjacent turn. The resistor finds application within a current limiter unit which employs magnetic repulsion and gas pressure to direct arcs that occur between separating contacts to within the high voltage region of an arc chute. The resistor is connected across the arc to reduce the arc current to a low enough value so that the arc becomes extinguished within a predetermined period of time.

    摘要: A current limiter unit employs both a magnetic repulsion field and a gas pressure force to direct arcs to within the high voltage region of an arc chute. The unit confines the evolved gas pressure in all directions except in the direction of the arc plates. Venting the opposite end of the arc chute rapidly motivates the arc through the arc plates and out of the unit. Venting the sides of the arc chute reduces the back pressure produced by arc gases as well as the pressure exerted upon the heated breaker casing. The combination of magnetic and directed gas repulsion substantilly reduces the I.sup.2 t value of the unit. A parallel positive temperature coefficient impedance can be connected across the arc to reduce the arc current to a low enough value so that the arc becomes extinguished within a predetermined period of time.

    摘要: The following specification describes a bimetal in the limiter assembly of a circuit breaker to operate the trip crossbar for opening the main circuit breaker contacts. An arm is also provided on one blade of the current limiter contacts to also operate the trip crossbar for ensuring rapid opening of the main contacts of the circuit breaker in response to high fault currents. The bimetal is connected between the electromagnet winding and one of the current limiter contact blades in shunt with a path of selected resistance. The resistance is selected as desired by connecting pigtail conductors of desired size either in shunt with or to selected portions of the bimetal to control the current passing through the bimetal for controlling the heat of the bimetal in accordance with the rating of the breaker. A calibration assembly for the bimetal is carried by the electromagnetic assembly.

    摘要: The invention provides a switching device having a contact protection circuit for arcing suppression. The switching device comprises a main relay for interrupting a load path and a dual coil auxiliary having a high resistance coil and a low resistance coil that operate the switching of an auxiliary contact. The auxiliary contact is connected in series with a PTC device and the low resistance coil of the auxiliary relay in a series arrangement. The series arrangement is connected in parallel to the main contact. When the main relay opens, the auxiliary contact is maintained closed during a given time interval due to the magnetic flux generated by the low resistance coil. The given time interval depends on the transition of the PTC device to trip state. In another configuration, the dual coil relay is substituted by two auxiliary relays.

    摘要: An electrical circuit interrupter includes a primary or normal current carrying path and a transient or alternative current carrying path. The normal current carrying path is established by a movable spanner extending between stationary contacts during normal operation. The transient current carrying path includes at least one variable resistance element which transitions from a lower resistance to a higher resistance during interruption. The transient current carrying path forms an open circuit in parallel with the normal current carrying path during normal operation. Upon interruption, the transient current carrying path is favored for the fault current, completely interrupting the normal current carrying path. The variable resistance elements increase their resistivity during this phase of operation to aid in providing high levels of back-EMF for complete interruption of fault current through the device and limitation of let-through energy.
