    摘要: An engine analyzer for an internal combustion engine includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter which digitizes an analog electrical input waveform representing, for example, a secondary or primary voltage waveform of the ignition coil of the internal combustion engine. The digitized input waveform is stored in the form of digital data in a data mamory. Upon request by the operator of the apparatus, a microprocessor selects digital data stored, and supplies that digital data to a display, which displays a visual representation of the waveform based upon the selected digital data. The engine analyzer apparatus produces a constant width waveform regardless of engine RPM, by determining the period of the waveform to be stored, and then varying the sample rate at which the A/D converter samples the analog waveform and converts the sampled waveform to digital data. As a result, the number of data samples, and thus the width of the displayed waveform, is constant.

    摘要: A voltage divider network comprising three series connected resistors serve to reference a test signal lead connectable to an internal combustion engine, with respect to ground for providing a voltage test signal on an output conductor representative of test data to be retrieved from the engine. Whenever the test signal lead is disconnected from the engine, the voltage divider network provides a non-zero voltage level on the output conductor, having a magnitude lying without a predetermined voltage range of possible test signals. A signal processing circuitry analyzes the test signals for providing a visual analysis display for the operator of the analyzer, and further is responsive to the aforesaid non-zero voltage level for blanking the portion of the visual display which is reserved for displaying analysis data.

    摘要: This invention relates to an instrument for measuring spontaneous ignition in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The instrument comprises a logic gate unit, which receives pulses representative of gas ionizations between the plug electrodes and control signals having a repetition period corresponding to a prefixed number of active cycles of the cylinder being checked and a duration corresponding to a prefixed number of passive cycles of the same cylinder during a spontaneous ignition measurement stage. The logic gate unit delines a first counting signal each time it receives a control signal and a second counting signal each time it receives a pulse during the duration of said control signal. First and second counter means receive and count said first and second counting signals, thus providing an indication of the number of measurement stages effected and respectively, of the number of measurement stages, in which spontaneous ignition has occurred.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine analyzer is described which permits analysis to be performed by attaching one sensor to the engine circuit. Timing at idle, engine speed, plug firing parade, etc., can be performed with only one sensor connected to the engine. For more extensive testing wherein additional leads are used, for example, at both the primary and secondary of the engine ignition coil, circuitry is provided for automatically triggering from both primary and secondary input signals or either one if only one is present. The analyzer also contains circuitry that enhances its use with both standard and electronic ignition systems. This circuitry rejects the noise generated by ignition systems in the cylinder ignition signals representative of plug firing so as not to mistrigger, or fire more than once for each plug firing.

    摘要: The disclosure describes an improved apparatus and method for displaying and printing the results of an analysis of an internal combustion engine. The results simultaneously are displayed on a cathode ray tube (CRT) face and are written into a buffer memory of a printer. An operator can move a cursor to the line of the CRT display for which special printing is desired. By pushing an ENTER switch, the operator causes a problem flag to be displayed on the screen at the desired line. The information displayed on the CRT face then is printed, together with an additional message indicating a possible vehicle problem. The line designated by the problem flag is printed in a modified ink color to indicate the source of the possible vehicle problem.

    摘要: An apparatus for, and method of, detecting the uneven operation of the individual cylinders in an internal combustion engine, and for diagnosing the cause thereof. The engine is operated at any convenient idle speed. Power cycle time periods between successive ignition times are measured, the deceleration rates between successive time periods are then computed, and finally the average deceleration rates for the respective cylinders are computed. Misfires occurring randomly in cylinders are detected when individual deceleration rates exceed the average deceleration rate for the corresponding cylinder by a predetermined limit amount. Repeated malfunctioning in an individual cylinder is detected when the average deceleration rate for the weakest cylinder exceeds that for the strongest cylinder by a predetermined limit amount.
