One or more blowers draw air from the baking chamber through the suction chambers. This disclosure relates to an apparatus for and a method of electrical inductance heating of metal strips and slabs. The heating method involves a plurality of pairs of individual electrical coils exposed on opposite sides of a path of movement of a metal strip or slab wherein the coils are elongated longitudinally of the path of movement of the metal member, such as a strip or slab, whereby the pattern of heating is in the way of stripes. Further, to eliminate any pulsing of current within the strip or slab being heated, each coil is spaced from a transversely adjacent coil a distance corresponding substantially to the effective heating width of that coil. The coils of a next longitudinal adjacent set of coils are transversely offset relative to the coils of the first mentioned set of coils so that each coil of the second set is aligned with a space between coils of the first set. This provides for a heating of the strip or slab in stripes and prevents overheating of the edges of the strip or slab. Further, the energization of the individual coils may be controlled in accordance with the existing temperature of that area of a strip or slab to be heated by the coils so as to heat a non-uniformly heated strip or slab to a uniform overall temperature.

In a level control method of controlling levels of a series of mutually joined materials when the materials pass through a catenary zone, whenever the joint travels a given length in the catenary zone, a plurality of optimum catenary curves are calculated with the position of the joint in the catenary zone as a parameter. Based upon a result of the calculation so obtained, a relationship indicative of the level of a material at the location of a catenary sensor is then calculated as a function of the position of the joint in the catenary zone. At this moment, the catenary sensor is used to detect the level of the material. Finally, the level of the material at the location of the catenary sensor is controlled with a value indicated by the above relationship being used as a target value. As a result, even when a joint between two adjoining materials having different unit weights passes through the catenary zone, the materials can travel in the catenary zone while the level is appropriately maintained.

The ratio (1/V) between the nip width 1 of the heating and pressing rollers and the peripheral speed V of the rollers is selected to be at least 0.06, and the pressure of contact per unit area between the heating and pressing rollers at their nip region is selected to be at least 7 kg/cm.sup.2, for increasing a temperature range corresponding to the rubber range of toners used. The toners which have a small molecular weight and a small molecular weight distribution are prevented from being offset before the toners are fixed. Teflon with desirable features can therefore be used as the surface layer of the heating roller.

The apparatus involves use of gas heating ovens adapted to allow several layers of material to be heated continuously, with the conveyors stacked are above the other. An oven includes a plurality of pairs of upper and lower spaced non-focused infrared heater panels. Product is conveyed between these panels to effect solder reflow. To increase heat transfer and to achieve temperature uniformity, air is forced through equally spaced holes drilled in the insulating block of one or more upper heating panels. To define an equal flow through these holes, a valve is placed below the air intake opening to define an annular opening between the panel casing and the valve. The valve has openings having an area which is matched to the annular area between the casing and the valve.
