Disclosed are new classes of diphenol compounds, derived from tyrosol or tyrosol analogues and hydroxybenzoic acid, which are useful as monomers for preparation of biocompatible polymers. Also disclosed are biocompatible polymers prepared from these monomeric diphenol compounds, including novel biodegradable and/or bioresorbable polymers of formula. These biocompatible polymers or polymer compositions with enhanced bioresorbabilty and processibility are useful in a variety of medical applications, such as in medical devices and controlled-release therapeutic compositions. The invention also provides methods for preparing these monomeric diphenol compounds and biocompatible polymers.

New aromatic polyesters and polyester-carbonates are prepared by the reaction of bisphenols of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently of each other represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a halogen atom, i and k denote zero or an integer 1 to 4, and X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 represent fluorine by the two-phase boundary process in an aqueous-alkaline phase with iso- or tere-phthaloyl dichloride. The polyesters and polyester carbonates according to the invention can be processed to form shaped articles by extrusion molding or in an extruder, applied in the form of solutions, or spun to fibers from melt or solution.

Cross-linked polycarbonate resins exhibit enhanced fire-resistance, especially non-dripping. The cross-linkers are useful to cross-link any resin having a group reactive with a carboxyl group.

Bromobiphenols containing at least two bromine atoms meta to the phenolic hydroxyl groups can be produced from 3,3'' ,5,5''-tetrasubstituted diphenoquinones by reacting the latter with bromine. The reaction can be controlled to produce little, if any, byproduct. The products obtained are dependent to some extent on the substituents in the four positions ortho to the hydroxyl groups. The biphenols can be used as antioxidants or as starting materials for preparation of flame-retardant polymeric compositions useful in the molding, coating and insulating arts.
