    摘要: A continuous heat treatment furnace has an entrance, a preheat zone, a thermal treatment zone, a cooling zone and an exit. Curtains are provided at the entrance and exit respectively. Nitrogen and hydrogen (or other reducing gas) are supplied to the furnace to create a non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere in the thermal treatment and cooling zones. Elongate workpieces such as tubes are advanced through the furnace and thereby heat treated (e.g. annealed). As the workpieces pass through the curtains so the tendency for air to leak into the furnace is increased. To counteract this tendency, position sensing plates are adapted to actuate a signal generator controlling a valve which in turn controls flow of e.g. nitrogen to the furnace. The arrangement is such that the flow of nitrogen to the furnace is increased wherever a workpiece is sensed, thereby enabling the essentially reducing or non-oxidizing character of the atmosphere to be sustained. If desired, the oxygen potential in the vicinity of the furnace entrance and exit can alternatively be monitored and used to modulate the flow of gas into the furnace.

    摘要: A furnace having an easily disassembled vacuum chamber to facilitate muffle replacement. The muffle is located over pins on the vacuum chamber base and is held against the base by a leaf spring between the muffle and the vacuum chamber top. The cylindrical wall of the vacuum chamber is correctly located with respect to the muffle by upright spacer bars upstanding from the vacuum chamber base about the periphery of the cylindrical wall. The spacer bars further serve to tie the top and base of the vacuum chamber together and against the cylindrical wall. The furnace is bottom loaded and has a door seal carried by the base so that the seal is not exposed to the direct heat from the muffle when the door is opened.

The preheater comprises a rectangular chamber which is adapted to be placed in the bottom of the furnace chamber. The preheater includes a pair of longitudinal passageways on opposite sides of the preheater chamber. There is a plurality of perforations in the top wall at one end of the preheater and along each passageway for distributing preheated air or other gas into the furnace chamber. In a preferred embodiment, the preheater is made of stainless steel, and the preheater chamber contains stainless steel wool which aids in heat transfer.

    摘要: The invention is a simple and reliable mechanical arrangement for automatically positioning a thermocouple-carrying rod in a vacuum-furnace assembly of the kind including a casing, a furnace mounted in the casing, and a charge-containing crucible mounted in the furnace for vertical movement between a lower (loading) position and a raised (charge-melting) position. In a preferred embodiment, a welded-diaphragm metal bellows is mounted above the furnace, the upper end of the bellows being fixed against movement and the lower end of the bellows being affixed to support means for a thermocouple-carrying rod which is vertically oriented and extends freely through the furnace lid toward the mouth of the crucible. The support means and rod are mounted for relative vertical movement. Before pumpdown of the furnace, the differential pressure acting on the bellows causes it to contract and lift the thermocouple rod to a position where it will not be contacted by the crucible charge when the crucible is elevated to its raised position. During pumpdown, the bellows expands downward, lowering the thermocouple rod and its support. The bellows expands downward beyond a point where downward movement of the thermocouple rod is arrested by contact with the crucible charge and to a point where the upper end of the thermocouple extends well above the thermocouple support. During subsequent melting of the charge, the thermocouple sinks into the melt to provide an accurate measurement of melt temperatures.

The working medium supplied to the working chamber, for transmitting pressure to work pieces within the chamber, may be a molten metal. Heating means within the vessel and cooling means at the exterior of the vessel cooperate to produce a continuous isothermal region completely surrounding the working chamber. The isothermal region is at the solidification temperature of the metal working medium, so that any potential leaks of molten metal working medium from the vessel are sealed by solidification of metal reaching the isothermal region. There is a heat-resistant liner within the vessel, the isothermal region being within the liner. A storage vessel for the working medium and a high pressure vessel, which may be a plunger pump, are connected to each other and to the working vessel through conduits furnished with valves.

    摘要: A furnace is described which comprises an insulated muffle comprising a ceramic fibrous body into which work pieces may be directly introduced through an opening. A closure member is arranged to close the opening, and means are provided for energizing a coiled heating element disposed in an open channel within the body and for controlling the rate at which the muffle is heated. The opening is arranged at the top of the muffle so as to ensure its rapid cooling subsequent to removal of the closure member therefrom. To enable the muffle to withstand rapid cooling, and in particular to retain the heating element in position, a plurality of strips of ceramic fibrous material are cemented diagonally across the top of the open channel. The closure member may be latched in the closed position by atmospheric pressure as the result of evacuating the interior of the furnace.
