摘要: Spaced apart packs of closely spaced steel or other metallic rods, tubes or other elongate articles are annealed or otherwise heat treated by advancing them step by step by a walking beam mechanism through a chamber having a series of independently temperature controlled zones along the path of travel, the articles being disposed horizontally and transversely of the path of travel. The atmosphere within each zone is recirculated therein independently of the recirculation of atmosphere within adjacent zones and without substantial mixing of the atmosphere within adjacent zones. Packs are introduced into the chamber from a bed of powered rollers adjacent to the inlet end of the chamber partly by pivoting the free ends of extensions of the movable rails of the walking beam mechanism, to lift a pack above the level of the powered rollers so that it can translate with the other packs within the chamber, and partly by pusher heads which slidably engage the movable rail extensions and which are reciprocable with respect thereto. The chamber is preferably utilized to process articles which retain a significant degree of latent heat from a manufacturing or other processing operation to avoid the need for a significant degree of reheating of the articles within the chamber and without substantial intermixing of the atmosphere from adjacent zones.

摘要: A continuous heat treatment furnace has an entrance, a preheat zone, a thermal treatment zone, a cooling zone and an exit. Curtains are provided at the entrance and exit respectively. Nitrogen and hydrogen (or other reducing gas) are supplied to the furnace to create a non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere in the thermal treatment and cooling zones. Elongate workpieces such as tubes are advanced through the furnace and thereby heat treated (e.g. annealed). As the workpieces pass through the curtains so the tendency for air to leak into the furnace is increased. To counteract this tendency, position sensing plates are adapted to actuate a signal generator controlling a valve which in turn controls flow of e.g. nitrogen to the furnace. The arrangement is such that the flow of nitrogen to the furnace is increased wherever a workpiece is sensed, thereby enabling the essentially reducing or non-oxidizing character of the atmosphere to be sustained. If desired, the oxygen potential in the vicinity of the furnace entrance and exit can alternatively be monitored and used to modulate the flow of gas into the furnace.

摘要: The combustion system includes a hearth lined with refractory, a combustion chamber formed in the refractory, an air manifold mounted on the hearth, a plurality of gas manifolds extending through the air manifold and into the combustion chamber, and a diffuser mounted on the manifolds to cause turbulence in the air/gas mixture. The gas manifolds include aspirating means for combining the air and gas. The combustion chamber is elongated and has an elongated neck with a flue gas exit slot over which the work piece passes. The flue gas from the combustion of the air/gas mixture in the combustion chamber increases in velocity as the flue gas passes through the elongated neck and exits the flue gas exit slot. The slot has a length sufficient to permit the work piece to rotate 360.degree. as the work piece rotates and travels through the hearth. This causes the work piece to be uniformly heated over every square inch of its surface.

摘要: An apparatus for heating billets and the like prior to hot extrusion is disclosed. The apparatus includes an elongated, insulated tunnel having an inlet opening and an outlet opening. A conveyor extends through the tunnel from the inlet to the outlet and conveys a plurality of equally spaced, transversely arranged billets in a step-like manner. The conveyor rotates the billets as they are conveyed through the tunnel. A source of high temperature air is connected to a plenum positioned above the conveyor. High temperature air is discharged from the plenum through a plurality of slot-like jets positioned above the billets so that the air directly impinges on the billets. Temperature probes are included for insuring that the billets are biased to one side of the conveyor upon discharge and for sensing the billet temperature to control the air temperature within the tunnel. An unloader is provided for receiving the billets discharged from the tunnel and rotating them through an angle of 90.degree. and to a position for transfer to an extrusion press.

The front portion and the rear portion are arranged to compress under a crash load along a generally longitudinal direction. The compressible load absorbing structure also includes a structural joint located within the compressible load absorbing structure, the joint is between at least two structural members. A load transfer element is configured to promote breaking of the structural joint during a vehicle crash.
