The invention relates to a method and apparatus for generating long-duration current impulses, as well as high-amplitude short-duration impulses, such as the type of pulses used in testing electrical equipment, in generating high magnetic fields, and for studying the properties of materials.A ladder network using equal capacitors in all its stages and equal inductances in all but the first and last stages forms the current generating apparatus. In order to convert the apparatus from a long current pulse to a short current pulse configuration the inductances are eliminated. In both configurations the internal resistance of the circuit elements constitutes the internal resistance of the apparatus.

An apparatus for use in monitoring the numbers of a selected species of insect comprises one or more traps into which is put a synthesized pheromone to attract that particular insect. Each trap has a grille comprising a plurality of bars between which is applied a high voltage so that when an insect of the selected species tries to enter the trap it touches adjacent bars and is electrocuted by the electric discharge between them. This discharge is detected by a discharge detector connected to the trap and the detector passes a signal to a transmitter which transmits it to a central receiver equipped with a discriminator for ignoring signals other than those from the transmitter and for passing the signals representing discharges to a pulse counter whereby a total of the number of insects trapped in a given time can be obtained at a central station without visiting each trap.

A DC voltage converter includes an oscillator that converts a DC battery voltage to an oscillating voltage, a low voltage transformer that increases the oscillating voltage to a higher oscillating voltage, and a voltage rectifying-capacitor charging network that increases the higher oscillating voltage to yet a higher DC voltage at an output terminal for DC high voltage utilization devices and the like. An electric switch portion is selectively actuated by the user to apply the battery voltage to the oscillator, resulting in the generation of the stepped-up DC voltage at the output terminal. Utilization devices for the voltage developed by the converter shown are a miniature animal training device and a cattle prod device. The miniature animal training device has a pair of outwardly projecting electrodes mounted on a side at one end of the housing that is sized and shaped to fit within and conform to the palm of a hand. The batteries, converter and electric switch portion are contained in the housing whereby the device produces a stepped-up DC voltage at said output terminal upon the depression of one of the electrodes as both electrodes are pressed against an object to be electrically shocked. The cattle prod device has a pair of electrodes mounted on the end of a housing assembly made up of telescoping tubular housing sections with one housing section containing the batteries, converter and electric switch portion whereby the pressing of the electrodes against an object to be shocked causes a shock of the object. The housing assembly is releasably supported by a rigid handle or an extensible handle assembly.

A capacitive load, such as an accelerating electrode of a polychromatic cathode-ray tube, is energized with a recurrent stepped voltage in the VHT (very high tension) range via at least two sources of direct current. The first source is directly connected across the load capacitance through a first charging circuit including a first winding which is inductively coupled with a second winding in a discharge circuit of a second capacitance connected across the second source by way of a second charging circuit. A control circuit so times the charging and discharging of the two capacitances that the voltage of the load capacitance is held at a basic level, corresponding to that of the first source, during an initial phase of the period T of the stepped output voltage and is thereafter progressively increased to several elevated levels by the transfer of charge increments from the second capacitance, the latter being repeatedly charged within each period T during consecutive intervals followed by a final interval after the last transfer. To help stabilize the output voltage at its elevated levels, a third capacitance may be charged for brief instants from a third source and thereafter discharged, a multiplicity of times within each interval except the first, through a third winding inductively coupled with the first and second windings, thereby generating a sawtooth pattern with a constant mean voltage.
