    Abstract: A piston for a heat engine has a chamber adjacent the piston head, for receiving cooling oil for cooling parts of the piston that in operation are subjected to elevated thermal stress. An oil inlet and an oil outlet provide for a suitable flow of oil into and out of the chamber, to ensure controlled cooling of the piston in particular of the piston head surface and the piston ring area. The chamber can be of annular shape so that the central part of the head surface remains uncooled.The invention is particularly suitable for a composite-structure piston.

    Abstract: A self-lubricating piston for an internal combustion engine comprises a composite coating adhered to a grooved piston surface and containing therein a first reinforcing phase of high tensile strength, high modulus of elasticity, reinforcing fibers of graphitic structure and a second reinforcing phase of powdered solid lubricant. The fibers are spooled around the piston and continuous for at least two turns. The fibers are preferably contacted along their lengths with longitudinally discontinuous bands of high thermal conductivity soft material forming multiple radial heat transfer paths throughout the composite layer.

    Abstract: An improved blade or vane structure is provided for a rotary, vane-type fluid compressor. The vane has a solid body of a metal having a low density and a high heat conducting capacity. The metal body is coated with an abrasion-resisting coating which has voids therein between the outer surface of the coating and the vane body. The voids are filled with plastic material to strengthen the coating against collapse in response to forces imposed on the vane during operation of the compressor. An outer coating of self-lubricating material may be bonded to the outer surface of the abrasion-resisting coating.
