A water-base fluid for use in drilling wells and other drilling operation includes a shale clay which swells in the presence of water. The fluid preferably includes: an aqueous based continuous phase, and a shale hydration inhibition agent having the formula: H—(OR)x—[—NH—CH2—CH2—CH2—O—CH2—CH2—NH—]—(R′O)y—H wherein R and R′ are independently selectable alkylene groups having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, and wherein x and y have independently selected values such that the sum of x and y is at least 1. The shale hydration inhibition agent should be present in sufficient concentration to reduce the swelling of the shale clay. The fluid may be used for formulating drilling fluids such as water-base drilling muds or clear brine drilling fluids. The fluid may also be used in the slurrification and disposal of drill cuttings that contain water swellable clays or shale clays.

The drilling fluid preferably includes: an aqueous based continuous phase, a weight material, and a shale hydration inhibition agent having the formula: H2N—R—{OR′}x—Y in which R and R′ are alkylene groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and x is a value from about 1 to about 25. The Y group should be an amine or alkoxy group, preferably a primary amine or a methoxy group. The shale hydration inhibition agent should be present in sufficient concentration to reduce the swelling of the shale. Also inclusive of the present invention is a method of reducing the swelling of shale clay encountered during the drilling of a subterranean well, the method comprising circulating in the well a water-base drilling fluid formulated in accordance with the present invention.

A conductive fluid has been formulated for use in a method of electrically logging subterranean wells. The conductive fluid includes a miscible combination of an oleaginous fluid, a water soluble alcohol, and an electrolytic salt. The electrolytic salt or brine of the salt is present in a concentration sufficient to permit the electrical logging of the subterranean well. The medium may further include gelling agent, weight material, surfactant, or corrosion inhibitors. The oleaginous fluid may preferably be a preferentially-oil-soluble glycol alone or in combination with mineral oil, vegetable oil, synthetic oil, silicone oil or combinations and mixtures of these. The alcohol may preferably be a water soluble glycol or glycol ether such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol and the like. The electrolytic salt or brine may be an inorganic or organic salt, examples of which include sodium chloride, sodium bromide, potassium chloride, ammonium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, calcium bromide, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, sodium citrate, or combinations thereof.

A drilling fluid and an invert emulsion fluid having utility for drilling, completing or working over subterranean oil and gas wells are disclosed. The drilling fluid includes a continuous phase that includes a preferentially-oil-soluble glycol ether which has a viscosity at 25.degree. C. of at least 10 centipoise, and an emulsifier. The invert emulsion fluid includes a oleaginous fluid including a preferentially-oil-soluble glycol ether which is miscible in oil and is such that less than 10% by volume of the glycol ether is miscible in fresh water at 20.degree. C., that is to say 10% by volume of the glycol ether mixed in fresh water results in two phases. The invert emulsion fluid also includes a nonoleaginous fluid and an emulsifier which is functionally effective to stabilize the invert emulsion. In one embodiment, glycol ether is selected from propylene glycol n-butyl ether; dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether; tripropylene glycol n-butyl ether; tetra propylene glycol n-butyl ether; pentapropylene glycol n-butyl ether; hexapropylene glycol n-butyl ether; heptapropylene glycol n-butyl ether and combinations thereof. The fluids of the present invention may also contain weighting agents, bridging agents, wetting agents, corrosion inhibitors and other components of drilling fluids that are known in the art.

The present invention relates to an improved continuous phase for an oil based drilling fluid and specifically a synthetic hydrocarbon continuous phase which is non-polluting and minimally toxic. The invention provides excellent drilling fluid properties under a wide variety of drilling conditions. The synthetic hydrocarbons are selected from the group consisting of branched chain oligomers synthesized from one or more olefins containing a C.sub.2 to C.sub.14 chain length and wherein the oligomers have an average molecular weight of from 120 to 1000. In the drilling fluid compositions, suitable emulsifiers, wetting agents, viscosifiers, weight materials and fluid loss additives are utilized in conjunction with water and/or a brine phase for the desired rheological properties.

On occasion, during drilling operations employing oil base drilling muds, conditions occur that cause the surface of the solid materials in the mud to be water wet, changing the rheology of the drilling mud such that it is unusable and has to be discarded. In accordance with this invention, a novel method is provided to reverse this condition so that the water wet surfaces of the solid particles become oil wet again, restoring the drilling mud to substantially its original condition or level or to such a condition that it can continue to be used in drilling operations. This is accomplished by adding to the drilling mud containing water wet particles at least one of a specific and critical group of imidazolines.The imidazolines may be added to stable oil mud drilling fluids to decrease possible water wetting of the particle surfaces therein.
