Abstract:
A breast cup for use with a breast pump for expressing breast milk is provided. The breast cup sealingly separates the air flow from the breast milk, provides a barrier against impingement of the flexible insert by the user's breast and provides a massaging member for facilitating expression of the breast milk.
Abstract:
There is provided a tracheal catheter designed so that a suction catheter may be used to suction out any secretions that accumulate in the zone above the balloon. There is further provided a tracheal catheter having a ventilation lumen with a flexible wall to provide a flexible lumen which takes up negligible volume when the catheter is not inserted. The suction catheter may be inserted into the flexible lumen, bending the flexible lumen wall that normally lies substantially flat against the ventilating lumen. As the suction catheter is inserted into the lumen, the lumen opens to accept it. When the catheter is removed, the wall of the flexible lumen moves back into position against the ventilating lumen wall, again taking up negligible volume. There is also provided a method of suctioning the subglottic space of an intubated patient. This involves providing a tube as described above, inserting a catheter into the flexible lumen from the proximal end, and providing suction to the proximal end of the catheter.
Abstract:
A suturing apparatus comprises a pair of jaws. A bendable needle housed in one of the jaws is adapted to carry a suture. An optional suture receiver may be disposed adjacent to the opposite jaw. A transition block curves the needle and directs it in a direction generally unparallel to an axis of the carrying jaw. The needle may also be configured to retrieve a suture. A retaining mechanism holds a suture in place to be engaged by the needle. The jaw housing the needle may include a lateral opening through which the suture may be inserted. The needle may also include a lateral notch which may be aligned with lateral opening to receive the suture. An actuator coupled to the needle enables the user to move the needle proximally to align the notch with the lateral slot.
Abstract:
A manually actuated breast pump is provided. The breast pump has a breast cup, pump mechanism and a container. The components of the breast pump are easily assembled and disassembled to facilitate use, cleaning, manufacture and transport. The breast pump can apply a negative pressure, a positive pressure or both to a user's breast. The breast pump provides fluid isolation between the pressure source and the expressed milk.
Abstract:
Filamentous microorganisms of improved properties, for example growth rate, may be obtained by culturing a sample of desired morphology until a substantial proportion of the culture diverges from that morphology, selecting an organism from the culture at that stage which exhibits the desired morphology and repeating the process with the selected microorganism. Furthermore, an isolated Fusarium graminearum having all of the characteristics of IMI 366464 and also possessing a greater morphological stability and growth rate than Fusarium graminearium strain IMI 145,425 is disclosed.
Abstract:
A multiple access communications system comprises a node spacecraft GEO and several user spacecraft LEO.sub.1 to LEO.sub.n. Each user spacecraft LEO.sub.1 to LEO.sub.n includes a transmit/receive terminal head 18.sub.1 to 18.sub.n, and the node spacecraft GEO includes n transmit/terminals 22 to 22.sub.n and a single beacon unit 24. The beacon beam may be operated to initiate acquisition phases which allow two-way communication to be established between the transmit/receive terminals 22.sub.1 to 22.sub.n on the node spacecraft and the transmit/receive terminals 18.sub.1 to 18.sub.n on the corresponding user terminals. The acquisition phases include a period during which the beacon scans an uncertainty cone associated with the node spacecraft. This scanning period is reduced for second and subseqeunt acquisitions by using the first and subsequently acquired communication links to provide a more accurate estimate of the angular attitude of the node spacecraft, thus reducing the extent of the uncertainty cone.
Abstract:
This invention relates to mechanisms for steering or pointing transmitted optical radiation beams and/or the look directions from which optical radiation beams are received. It also relates to optical communications systems incorporating such mechanisms, more particularly but not exclusively interspacecraft communications systems.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for managing reduced pressure at a tissue site are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a pump for supplying reduced pressure to the tissue site, a motor coupled to the pump to propel the pump, and a drive system electrically coupled to the motor that includes a power source that provides a source of direct current power to the motor during an operational period at a substantially constant current and of sufficient magnitude to supply a targeted reduced pressure during the operational period. The drive system also includes a controller that monitors the pump's loading on the motor by measuring the voltage across the motor to determine whether the motor voltage remains within a predetermined operational range of voltages necessary for maintaining the reduced pressure supplied by the pump proximate to the targeted reduced pressure without directly measuring the reduced pressure using a pressure sensor.
