Abstract:
Embodiments of a heat transfer apparatus, and related methods, involve a curved flow path, a heat source external to and in thermal communication with at least a portion of an inner radial boundary of the curved flow path, and a working fluid, including a heavier component and a lighter component, flowing through the flow path. The flow path causes the working fluid to experience centrifugal force so as to preferentially force the heavier component toward the exterior wall portion and thereby cause the lighter component to preferentially absorb heat from the interior wall portion.

The invention also provides a method of preparing hydrophobic surface-treated silica particles.

Abstract:
A first address is received and is used to determine a first address range. The first address range includes a second address range and a third address range. If the first address is in the second address range, a fourth address range is determined. The fourth address range is different from the first address range. Information is retrieved from a memory in response to determining that a second address is in the first address range or the fourth address range. If the first address is in the third address range, a fifth address range is determined. The fifth address range is different from the first address range. Other information is retrieved from the memory in response to determining the second address is in the first address range or the fifth address range.
Abstract:
A method and system for presenting a document to a plurality of media device types optimized for the display medium. A document is generated in a markup language, and a plurality of style sheets are provided for formatting the document for a requesting device, with each style sheet accommodating a distinct display environment. The markup elements that reference two separate cascading style sheets (CSS) are configured differently such that they isolate the CSS reference for either high-resolution graphical display devices or small screen, low-resolution graphical display devices. A third style sheet is used as an intermediary to pass a CSS reference to small screen browsers while at the same time, shielding the CSS reference from certain high resolution browsers incapable of parsing the syntax of the reference. When a request for the document is received, the display environment of the requesting device is determined and a plurality of document presentation attributes are automatically transformed for the determined display environment. The formatted document is then delivered to the requesting device.
Abstract:
A radio configured to dynamically control cancellation of undesired signals in an audio stream. The radio includes a noise cancellation processor configured to receive an audio stream from a user and to alter information in the audio stream by filtering out undesired signals in the audio stream. The radio also includes a receiving component configured to receive a data packet from a remote device, to retrieve configuration information from the data packet, and to dynamically apply the configuration information, while the radio is being used by a user, to settings associated with the noise cancellation processor. A dynamically enabled noise cancellation processor suppresses undesired signals associated with a subsequent incoming audio stream provided by the user and transmits at least one of an altered audio stream or an unaltered audio stream to the remote device.
Abstract:
A system is provided for counterfeiting countermeasures, the system comprising: a first authenticity indicator disposed in a print substrate coating; a second authenticity indicator disposed in a print generating matrix; a print pattern comprising the print generating matrix disposed upon the print substrate coating; a detector configured to detect the first and the second authenticity indicators in a portion of the print pattern within the field of the detector.
Abstract:
A measurement system assessment tool is disclosed. In particular embodiments, a method includes communicating a plurality of questions associated with a plurality of dimensions of a measurement system. The method further includes receiving a response to each of the plurality of questions, each of the plurality of responses associated with one of a plurality of dimensions of the measurement system. The method further includes determining, for each of the responses, a numerical value associated with the response. The method also includes, for each of the plurality of dimensions, selecting a subset of the plurality questions, each of the questions in the subset associated with the same respective dimension of the measurement system. The method further includes calculating, for each of the plurality of dimensions, an average score, wherein each average score comprises an average of the numerical values associated with the questions in the subset.
Abstract:
Systems and methods of printing to a tangible medium provide for reducing ink penetration via the controlled selection of halftone patterns. One method includes steps of printing to the tangible medium (e.g., via a multicolor ink supply such as CMYK) using a plurality of initial halftone patterns, measuring ink absorption of the tangible medium in response to printing to the tangible medium, and determining a subset of the plurality of initial halftone patterns based on the absorption measurement. The method also includes printing a print job to the tangible medium based on the subset of the plurality of initial halftone patterns. For example, a print controller may be reprogrammed with the subset of the plurality of initial halftone patterns to print a print job to reduce the amount of ink applied to the tangible medium.
Abstract:
Output of a showerhead system is selectable between a plurality of spray modes using a control mode selector located adjacent to a shower pipe. The showerhead system also includes an adjustment mechanism located near or about the shower pipe to pivotably adjust the position of the showerhead. The showerhead system also has dual support structures in the form of arms extending between the control mode selector and the showerhead. The dual arms each house one or more hoses that may be flexible and transport water from the mode selector can be adjusted to direct water to individual hoses or simultaneously to multiple hoses.
Abstract:
Two surgical instruments are inserted through a guide tube. The surgical instruments exit at an intermediate position of the guide tube and are oriented to be substantially parallel to the guide tube's longitudinal axis as they exit. A stereoscopic image capture component is on the guide tube between the intermediate position and the guide tube's distal end. The image capture component's field of view is generally perpendicular to the guide tube's longitudinal axis. The surgical instruments and the guide tube are telemanipulatively controlled.
