    摘要: A method and apparatus for transmitting digital data in a cellular environment. Adjacent cells of the cellular system are prevented from simultaneously transmitting data. Because the noise from transmissions of adjacent cells is a primary source of interference, the transmission rate of power limited base stations can be dramatically increased when the noise from adjacent cells is eliminated. The transmissions to each subscriber station are made at a fixed transmission power level. However, the data rate of transmitted signals differs from one subscriber station to another depending the path loss differences. In a first exemplary embodiment, the data rate of transmissions to a subscriber station is determined by selecting an encoding rate for the transmitted signal while holding the symbol rate constant. In a second exemplary embodiment, the data rate of transmissions to a subscriber station is determined by selection a modulation format for the transmitted signal which directly changes the symbol rate of transmission to a subscriber station.

    摘要: A communication system for transmitting variable rate data is disclosed wherein redundancy is added to the variable rate data to provide repetition symbols. The repetition symbol data is transmitted with symbol energy scaled in accordance to the rate of the variable rate data when the variable rate data is greater than or equal to a nominal data rate. When the variable rate data is less than the nominal data rate, the symbol data is transmitted at nominal symbol energy and redundancy is removed by transmission gating of a proportion of the transmission symbol data determined in accordance with the rate of the variable rate data. Furthermore, a receiver for receiving the variable rate data is disclosed which uses the redundancy in the transmitted data symbol stream to make a corrected estimate of the transmitted symbol data.

    摘要: An improved system and method for communicating information at variable data rates over in-phase (I) and quadrature phase (Q) communication channels in a CDMA spread spectrum communication system is disclosed herein. In an exemplary implementation an input information signal is transmitted over either an I or Q communication channel using a direct sequence spread spectrum communication signal. The information signal is initially divided into first and second subsignals, which are respectively provided to first and second coset-encoding networks. The first coset-encoding combines the first subsignal with a first coset code, while the second coset-encoding network combines the second subsignal with a second coset code orthogonal to the first coset code. In this way the first and second coset-encoding networks are operative to produce first and second coset-encoded signals, respectively. A composite coset-encoded signal formed from the first and second coset-encoded signals is then modulated by an orthogonal function signal to provide a first modulated signal. In-phase pseudorandom noise (PN.sub.I) and quadrature phase pseudorandom noise (PN.sub.Q) signals of predetermined PN codes are used for spreading the first modulated signal for transmission to a receiver over either the I or Q communication channel, respectively. The receiver is operative to produce an estimate of the input information signal on the basis of the modulated carrier signal received over either the I or Q communication channel.

A Viterbi decoder is used to reconstruct from the received signal an estimate of a data bit that was coded for transmission. This estimate is re-encoded and provided to a trellis output mapper along with the sector value. The trellis mapper in response to the input re-encoded estimate and sector value provides an estimate of an an uncoded data bit transmitted with the coded data bit.

    摘要: A system for performing transmit power and admission control for a satellite based wireless communication systems. Admission control uses centralized admission and distributed admission controls. Centralized admission control uses a maximum persistence value broadcasted from a hub to terminals. Persistence is the probability that a transmission will timely occur. Each terminal transmits a persistence that is no greater than the maximum persistence value. If the transmission fails, the transmission is repeated using the same probability. Lowering the persistence introduces a delay for alleviating congestion. Power control is performed using centralized and distributed power control. Centralized power control uses power control commands transmitted from the hub to each terminal. When an acknowledge is not received, a backoff and recovery procedure is performed. Distributed power control is performed during the recovery process when a terminal fails to receive an acknowledgment message after a predetermined number of attempts.
