Methods for making a nonlinear optical device and related devices are dissed. The method includes creating an ordered dispersion of charged particles in a surrounding medium. The charged particles and the surrounding medium are chosen such that they initially have identical refractive indices. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, cadmium sulfide inclusions are added to at least one of (a) the particles or (b) the medium. The cadmium sulfide inclusions have a highly nonlinear refractive index. The inclusions are optically nonlinear and upon high intensity radiation the refractive index of the particles change. This change in the refractive index occurs on the order of nanoseconds. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a nonfluorescent dye is incorporated into at least one of (a) the particles or (b) the medium. The dye is photoabsorptive. Upon being impinged with high intensity radiation, the dye absorbs photons and heats the surrounding particles. This temperature increase causes a change in the refractive indices of the particles or medium. When the particle or medium refractive index is altered from that of the medium or particle the array diffracts light and prevents transmission of a specific wavelength. In accordance with yet another aspect of the invention, photorefractive materials such as lithium niobate or barium titanate substances can be used to induce the required optical nonlinearity. Related devices are also disclosed which exhibit high speed optical switching properties. The device may be employed advantageously in an optical computer or optical limiter.

A process of preparing a photographic emulsion having radiation-sensitive silver iodohalide grains. Iodide is introduced into the grains by releasing iodide ions from iodate (IO.sub.3.sup.-). Release of iodide ions from the IO.sub.3.sup.- is employed to enhance the uniformity of iodide availability during emulsion preparation, either during grain precipitation or subsequent halide conversion. The process of the invention is in one preferred form directed to the partial halide conversion of tabular grains. A speed-granularity advantage is demonstrated.

There is described a method of manufacturing a digital radiography panel. The method includes providing a scintillator screen and spray coating an acrylic adhesive composition on the scintillator screen. A flat panel detector and the scintillator screen with acrylic adhesive composition are compressed together at a force of about 5 psi to about 15 psi, at an atmospheric pressure of about 0.3 Torr to about 100.0 Torr for a time sufficient to affix the flat panel detector to the scintillator screen to form the digital radiography panel.

A polymer composite comprising a thermoplastic polymer compounded with a phenolic antioxidant, an organo-disulfide antioxidant, and a silver-based antimicrobial agent. The specified combination of antioxidant stabilizers is superior in inhibiting undesirable discoloration of thermoplastic polymers in the presence of compounded silver-based antimicrobial agents. A process of preparing such a composite, comprising compounding the phenolic antioxidant and organo-disulfide antioxidant with the thermoplastic polymer prior to compounding the silver-based antimicrobial agent with the thermoplastic polymer.
