A channel communication apparatus and method are provided for a CDMA communication system method for acquiring signals from multiple adjacent base stations by a terminal; for providing more efficient set management; for providing more efficient multipath acquisition and finger assignment; and for acquiring a signal sent from an adjacent base station and a multipath signal which can reduce power consumption and hardware complexity in the terminal. The apparatus and methods also accurately measure the power or time delay of a signal received from a base station by a terminal in a CDMA communication system.

In the device, a despreader despreads multiple channel signals including a specific channel with an orthogonal code assigned to the specific channel repeating at least two same second symbols at a given first symbol duration, to generate despread repeated symbols. A difference signal generator receives the despread second symbols, and generates a difference signal between a presently received second symbol and a previously received second symbol. A noise detector converts the difference signal to an energy value to generate a non-orthogonal noise signal.

The transmitter includes: a first multiplier for multiplying a pseudo noise signal and input data intended for transmission; a differential encoder for differentially encoding a signal outputted from the first multiplier; a modulator for modulating a signal outputted from the differential encoder; a second multiplier for multiplying the signal modulated by the modulator and a transmitting carrier and for outputting a spread spectrum signal; and an antenna for propagating the spread spectrum signal in the air. The receiver includes: a generator for generating a receiving carrier corresponding to a frequency offset signal; a first multiplier for multiplying a spread spectrum signal received from the transmitter and the receiving carrier and outputting the multiplied signal as a first low frequency signal; a second multiplier for multiplying the spread spectrum signal by a modified carrier in which the receiving carrier is modified by a given phase, and outputting the multiplied signal as a second low frequency signal; a differential detector for detecting a phase rotation amount between each complex digital signals; a correlator for correlating a pseudo noise code with the phase rotation detected by the differential detector; and a frequency offset measurer for measuring a frequency offset between the spread spectrum signal and the receiving carrier by using the signal from the correlator and outputting the frequency control signal for adjusting the receiving carrier signal.

A transmitter modulates the broadcast parameter message and provides the modulated broadcast parameter message to a terminal that receives the broadcast service.

A searcher searches for a multi-path signal using a received signal output from a Radio Frequency (RF) part, and calculates an energy value for each hypothesis. A demodulator demodulates a Paging Indicator (PI) for a hypothesis for which an energy value calculated by the searcher exceeds a valid path threshold. A controller determines whether a paging channel is received, according to the demodulated signal output from the demodulator, and performs finger allocation using a multi-path search of the searcher if it is determined that the paging channel is transmitted.
